We’re now officially less than a week away from the start of the rescheduled UEFA Euro 2020 tournament and the excitement is really beginning to build. From fans hoping to get into the stadiums to those watching around the world, we’ve been waiting five years for another edition of the European Championship – and it’s almost upon us. Today, we’re going to take a look at one of the last major warm-up games with England preparing to host Romania.

England

England head into the Euros knowing that they’re one of the favourites to win the whole thing, and also knowing that the final is going to be played at the home of English football – Wembley Stadium. That’s the kind of motivation they need to put their best foot forward in the next few weeks and when you take one look at their squad, you’d have to imagine the minimum requirement here is going to be reaching the semi-finals.

Team News

Maguire and Alexander-Arnold are both still out through injury with the latter officially being ruled out of the entire Euros. Henderson, Phillips and Rashford are all experiencing niggles with the expectation being that England will name a heavily rotated starting line-up.

Romania

Back in the day Romania were known for causing an upset from time to time on the international stage but now, they’re just trying to piece together a team capable of staying consistent. The new Nations League system means there’s a decent chance they could qualify for a tournament or two in the next few years and beyond, but they just need to take things step by step with regards to making gradual progress on the pitch.

Team News

Tanase is out through suspension after being sent off against Georgia earlier this week. Andrei Burca, Bancu and Cristea have all been ruled out of the game through injury but aside from that, Romania are tipped to name an attacking starting XI in an attempt to keep up with the fire power we all know the hosts can produce.

Factors to Consider

  • England will begin their Euro 2020 campaign next Sunday, whereas Romania didn’t qualify.
  • England have won five and lost one of their last six games.
  • Romania have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
  • England have scored 14 goals and conceded three in their last six games.
  • Romania have scored 12 goals and conceded 12 in their last six games.

Conclusion

The Romanians tend to be solid in front of goal but on the flip side of that, they also tend to leak quite a few too. We expect this to be quite high paced with Romania wanting to make a statement, with England just wanting to get through to the tournament without sustaining any more injuries. We’re backing Southgate’s men to win the game but it isn’t going to be without a few questions being asked in an ambitious prediction of 4-2 to the Three Lions.

Prediction: England win
