The Premier League is back once again this weekend as continue on through the always-crazy month of December. There are so many teams up and down the top flight who are in desperate need of some points on the board now that we’re in the midst of the busy winter schedule, especially with such a short spell of time between these fixtures and the games earlier on in the week. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at a clash between two PL originals: Everton and Arsenal.
Everton
Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure has been full of ups and downs thus far and while the defeats this season have been hard to take, it’s nothing when compared with the euphoria that Toffees fans feel to see their side pushing for the top four again. Whether or not they can keep up this pace is definitely up for debate but for the time being, they just need to ride this wave and see how far it can take them heading into 2021.
Team News
Digne, Gbamin and Delph have all been ruled out for the Toffees, with the current fitness doubts being Coleman, Allan and Rodriguez. Elsewhere, the expectation is that Coleman will come back into the starting XI.
Arsenal
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta knows that there is a decent chance this could be his last game in charge and while that may sound overdramatic, it really isn’t. The board can back him all they want in a public sense but if they slip down into 16th, which is a very real possibility, then all of that good faith could go flying out of the window. The fanbase seems to be split down the middle on the issue right now but that’ll probably change one way or the other depending on how things go this weekend.
Team News
Gabriel and Xhaka will both be serving suspensions for this one due to recent red cards with Partey still being on the shelf through injury, whereas Martinelli, Nelson and Kolasinac are all fitness doubts for Arsenal.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in February, Arsenal beat Everton 3-2.
- Everton have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Arsenal have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Everton have scored eight goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- Arsenal have scored 10 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
Although Everton are going to do everything in their power to really push Arsenal to the limit, we think the Gunners are going to dig deep and save their manager for another week. We’ve just got this feeling that everything is going to click into place and if that happens, Arsenal are more than capable of getting the job done. Our formal prediction is going to be 2-0 to the visitors but either way, it’s definitely going to be close.
