With their relegation from the Serie A very likely to be confirmed this week, bottom side Salernitana travel to face Frosinone at the Stadio Benito Stirpe on Friday evening for a clash within the 34th round of the 2024/25 season in the Italian top flight.
Meanwhile, Frosinone are in a difficult situation themselves, sitting just two places above Salernitana, but the 13-point advantage over the visitors in this game still gives them realistic hope of survival.
Frosinone
While Frosinone have remained undefeated in Serie A for over a month, the need for victories is pressing for Eusebio Di Francesco’s team as their top-flight status hangs in the balance.
Their last defeat dates back to a 3-2 loss against Lazio on March 16th. However, despite this promising streak, four consecutive draws have kept the 18th-placed side entrenched in the danger zone.
Frosinone managed to secure commendable points against Genoa and Napoli, rallying back to salvage draws in both encounters. However, they struggled to find the net against Bologna and Torino. This is hardly surprising considering the defensive prowess of Thiago Motta’s and Ivan Juric’s teams, who boast the second-best and fourth-best defensive records in the league, conceding 26 and 29 goals, respectively.
With this in mind, Frosinone will fancy their chances against a side that has conceded no less than 70 goals in the Serie A this season, obviously the worst in the league on that parameter after 33 games.
Seeing other relegation-threatened teams like Lecce, Cagliari, Hellas Verona, and Empoli secure crucial points in the previous round, Frosinone surely understand that Friday’s match is a must-win to enhance their chances of avoiding relegation to the Serie B.
Team News
Sergio Kalaj has been sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a ligament injury. Abdou Harroui’s availability remains uncertain due to a thigh issue, while Anthony Oyono is unlikely to participate as he continues to recover from a thigh problem of his own.
Salernitana
Salernitana could actually get relegated even before this match kicks off. If Udinese beat AS Roma on Thursday in the remainder of the match that was suspended when Evan Ndicka collapsed in the 72nd minute, that will be it. However, Roma have been on fine form recently and desperately need points as well, and that should give Stefano Colantuono’s side some hope that the Friday trip to Frosinone counts for more than mere pride.
On the other hand, Udinese’s potential failure to find a late winner (the game will continue from the 72nd minute) would likely only postpone the inevitable for Colantuano’s men. They could make life difficult for Frosinone on Friday of course, but it should be said that Salernitana have won away from home just once from 25 attempts this term. Last week, they lost 0-2 at home to Fiorentina, courtesy of late strikes from Christian Kouame and Jonathan Ikone.
It’s not really surprising to learn that Salernitana have the worst points tally in 2024, but securing only three from a possible 45 since the turn of the year is a rather shocking record.
Team News
Lassana Coulibaly is set to make a return to the team’s midfield after serving his suspension against Fiorentina.
However, Antonio Candreva will be unable to add to his 500 Serie A appearances this week due to his fifth yellow card of the 2023-24 season received against Fiorentina.
Giulio Maggiore and Grigoris Kastanos are expected to remain sidelined due to knee injuries. Marco Pellegrino may step in for Lorenzo Pirola if the latter has not fully recovered from the thigh issue that led to his substitution during the defeat to Fiorentina.
Conclusion
One team has everything to play for in front of their own fans, and the other will almost certainly be relegated whatever happens in this game. Frosinone would likely be the favourites to win even if it weren’t for such desperate circumstances for Salernitana.
