Germany all but secured their place in the 2017 Confederations Cup semi-finals as they shared spoils with Chile, and they are now expected to finish the job against Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions missed the opportunity to defeat Australia and now face a must-win game if they are to remain in the competition.
Germany
Head coach Joachim Low made a bold decision to leave almost all star players of of his 2017 Confederations Cup squad and instead decided to include some footballers that haven’t had a lot of international experience. The call-up was a reward for their performances in the previous Bundesliga campaign, and the boss obviously knew the newcomers would be incredibly motivated to prove they deserve to be playing at the highest level. Two games into the tournament and Germany are on the verge of securing a place in the semi-final, having picked up four points in the process. Borussia M’gladbach forward Lars Stindl has so far shown the most, scoring in both games, while Leon Goretzka and Julian Brandt also impressed. Following the 3-2 triumph over Australia, Die Mannschaft performed well in the 1-1 draw with Chile, and the fact that Joachim Low didn’t make a single substitution in said game is enough to suggest he was quite happy with the effort from his players. All that’s left now is to defeat Cameroon and try and secure the first place in the group.
Team News
Joachim Low is unlikely to make major changes to the side that shared spoils with Chile, especially since there are no fresh selection worries to report.
Cameroon
Cameroon have enjoyed little success since lifting their fourth Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 2002, that is until they surprised everyone at the 2017 tournament and added the fifth title to their name. That success was enough to secure another Confederations Cup appearance, but the Indomitable Lions failed to impress in the build up, losing friendly games to Guinea and Colombia, albeit winning an important AFCON qualifier against Morocco. Head coach Hugo Broos raised quite a few eyebrows with his final Confederations Cup squad, leaving out the likes of Joel Matip, Nicolas N’Koulou, Henri Bedimo, Aurelien Chedjou, Clinton N’Jie and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, deciding to rely on relatively inexperienced side. Cameroon produced a decent performance in their opening fixture, but eventually had to settle for a 2-0 defeat to Chile as they conceded two late goals, while failure to beat Australia all but ended their hopes of reaching the semis. The Indomitable Lions now need to beat Germany by two goals or more to qualify, which is clearly a tall order.
Team News
There have been no reported selection issues for Hugo Broos, who could field an unchanged side to the one that shared spoils with Australia.
Key Factors to Consider
- Cameroon have never beaten Germany (D1 L2)
- Die Mannschaft scored 2 or more goals in each of those games
- Germany are unbeaten in last 12 matches (W9 D3)
- Cameroon lost three of last five fixtures (W1 D1)
- Indomitable Lions need to win by two goals or more
Conclusion
Joachim Low’s second-string side have shown a great deal of promise so far and we expect them to record a comfortable triumph over Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions have no choice but to adopt attack-minded approach, and that is likely to make the job even easier for Germany.
