We’re on the final stretch before the 2022 FIFA World Cup and this year, as a result of the tournament taking place in winter, preparation is going to look a little different for all 32 clubs involved. The next step forward in the midst of this chaotic schedule will be the final set of Nations League games, with a pretty intriguing collision going down later this week between Germany and Hungary.
Germany
Ever since winning the World Cup back in 2014, it’s felt as if the German national team have been taking their foot off of the gas. Whether that be due to a turnover in talent or a lack of motivation, it’s been tough for their fanbase to watch – and it’s something we expect to see change heading into a World Cup that could bring them a lot of joy, especially with fewer expectations on their shoulders.
Hungary
Hungary, despite looking good in both the Euros and Nations League, will not be taking part in the World Cup after failing to qualify. If anything, though, we think this could help boost their motivation for Euro 2024, in which they could easily be seen as a dark horse to progress quite far. Given where they’re currently at, we’d argue they’ve got nothing to lose in this trip to Leipzig.
Factors to Consider
- Germany and Hungary have drawn their last two games together, one at Euro 2020 and one in the Nations League.
- Germany are 2nd in League A Group 3 of the Nations League with six points.
- Hungary are 1st in League A Group 3 of the Nations League with seven points.
- Germany have won two and drawn four of their last six games.
- Hungary have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
Conclusion
We expect to see experimentation on the part of the Germans as they chop and change in an effort to figure out what they want to do at the World Cup. That’ll probably lead to them altering their shape a few times throughout the duration of this game and because of that, we’re expecting to see the Hungarians put up a real fight, ending in an entertaining 1-1 or 2-2 draw as we rapidly approach the big show later this year. From there, it’s anyone’s guess as to what direction the two nations will go in over the course of the next few months.
