The German Bundesliga is back in our lives once again and while there are plenty of clubs that are planning on having a big year, everyone knows that this is Bayern Munich’s league. They’ll defend it until the empire comes falling down and it doesn’t appear as if that’s going to happen anytime soon – but if they’re going to surrender the title, teams like Hoffenheim need to be treating their clash later today as if it’s a cup final.
Hoffenheim
A 2-0 loss to RB Leipzig back in June knocked Hoffenheim off of their game ever so slightly, but since then, they’ve been doing well. They beat Augsburg, they battered Union Berlin, they stunned everyone with a 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund and then they enjoyed a few months off. They proceeded to knock Chemnitzer FC out of the cup on penalties before a dramatic 3-2 win over Cologne to kickstart their new league campaign.
Team News
There are plenty of injury problems for the hosts to deal with which is never ideal when you’re going up against Bayern. Nordtveit and Stafylidis have both been ruled out definitively whereas Skov, Geiger, Hubner and Kramaric are all doubtful.
Bayern Munich
You’ve got to beat the best to be the best, and Bayern Munich did just that in their run to the Champions League final back in August. They beat Chelsea, Barcelona and Lyon before a narrow 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. They went on to destroy Schalke 8-0 in September prior to their appearance in the UEFA Super Cup. They had to go through some tough times against Sevilla, but they did manage to pull out the 2-1 win to take home the trophy.
Team News
After the trip to play in the Super Cup, some wonder whether or not there will be any changes from Hansi Flick. Nianzou is the only confirmed injury absence heading into this game whereas Coman is expected to be available for this game now that his quarantine period has officially come to an end.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in February, Bayern beat Hoffenheim 6-0.
- Hoffenheim have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Bayern have won their last 24 games in all competitions.
- Hoffenheim have scored 16 goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- Bayern have scored 26 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
Conclusion
Hoffenheim can change everything up as much as they want but when push comes to shove, Bayern Munich are just far too good. We don’t think it’s going to be as big of a win as it was when they last locked horns but they’re still going to pick up a pretty big scoreline. Nobody can definitively say one way or the other whether or not Bayern will go on to retain their European crown, but there’s a very good chance they’ll do so in the Bundesliga.
