The European Championship qualifiers are in full swing, as we edge closer and closer towards finding out which 24 teams will be competing in UEFA Euro 2020 next summer. This time next year we’ll be just a few short days away from the tournament commencing, and let’s be honest, we all know that year is going to absolutely fly by. The game we’ll be looking at today is Hungary vs Wales, with both teams harbouring very realistic ambitions of qualifying for the tournament via the top two spots in Group E.

Hungary

Back in the day Hungary was one of the most feared nations in world football, but that hasn’t been the case for quite some time now. In the last few years, however, they seem to have been slowly building themselves back up, to the point where a lot of people consider them to be one of the rising stars of the European game. They currently find themselves top of their group with two wins and one loss from their first three games, with one of the victories being a surprise triumph over World Cup finalists Croatia.

Team News

Orban will lead the back four after his surprise brace against Azerbaijan, with Dzsudzsak and Szalai likely leading the line for the home side.

Wales

Many fans and pundits alike have questioned Ryan Giggs’ ability to lead Wales back to a major tournament. With that being said, they do have a handful of world class players within their ranks that could easily be the driving force behind this campaign. Despite the allure of the Nations League this squad will still feel like they’re capable of qualifying for Euro 2020 via their group, even after their loss to Croatia. They just need to stay composed, play their own game, and try to get at Hungary early on.

Team News

The Welsh will look towards Bale and James as their impact players in this one, with Davies fighting through the pain of his injury to feature.

Factors to Consider

  • The game will be played at Groupama Arena in Budapest.
  • Hungary have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
  • Wales have won three and lost three of their last six games.
  • Hungary have scored 12 goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
  • Wales have scored five goals and conceded five in their last six games.

Conclusion

Wales have game winners within their ranks and we’re all well aware of this, but we don’t think they’re going to have enough in their locker to dethrone Hungary in their own back yard. They just seem to be clicking in all the right places right now, to the point where it’s hard to imagine them not qualifying for Euro 2020 via their group. The Welsh will put up a decent fight as they did against Croatia, but we still believe the Hungarians will come away with all three points tomorrow night.

Prediction: Hungary win

Best Odds: 2/1
