Inter Milan and Ac Milan meet at the San Siro on Sunday night in the first Derby della Madonnia. It’s one of the biggest matches this weekend and both sides will be desperate to get the bragging rights on their fierce rivals.
Inter Milan
A strong sense of discipline has quickly been installed at Inter Milan by manager Luciano Spalletti, and he’s surely strengthened his team after the arrivals of Matias Vecino and Milan Skriniar. This has reflected on their results so far in Serie A after only dropping two points in seven games and conceding three goals in the process. Things seem to be working well at the other end of the pitch too, with Mauro Icardi scoring six goals already this term. The striker netted for the Nerazzurri in the last Milan derby and should be fresh after missing out on representing Argentina in the international break. It’s too early to say whether Spalletti’s men are serious title contenders but they will be confident of getting one over on their rivals at least. They have won all three of their home games so far and have collected a clean sheet in each of the victories. Inter know the importance of this game to their fans and they will be all too aware of their opponents defensive frailties.
Team News
Marcelo Brozovic will miss the match due to injury.
AC Milan
Even though AC Milan’s wealthy Chinese owners have forked out more than £175 million over the summer, most of the recruits were young prospects and it’s unlikely to mean they will hit the ground running this season. This has been reflective on their results and their 4-1 loss at Lazio last month has been followed by recent back-to-back defeats to Sampdoria and Roma. The pressure is really mounting on head coach Vincenzo Montella and he really cannot afford to lose against their bitter rivals on Sunday night. The Italian doesn’t have a problem in beating the smaller teams but they seem to struggle when they play the bigger, better organised sides in the league. Maybe it’s the wrong time to be playing Inter then, who boast the best defence in the league and are currently two points off top. Nonetheless, it’s hard to see Milan going for anything else other than a win, which could make for an enthralling contest that could be a real feast for footballing fans.
Team News
Hakan Calhanoglu is suspended for the game, while defender Andrea Conti is still injured.
Key Factors to Consider
- These two teams have faced each other 166 times in Serie A, with Inter recording 61 wins compared to Milan’s 51
- The most common scoreline in these games have been 1-1, which has occurred in 21 meetings
- During the last 12 Milanese derbies playing as the home side, Inter have only lost on one occasion (W8 D3)
- Out of the players who have taken at least 10 shots during this campaign, Icardi is the player with the highest on-target percentage with 81
- Spalletti has won all three matches against Montella in Serie A. Furthermore, he has came up against Milan on 21 occasions in Serie A, winning 10 and drawing four
Conclusion
Due to Inter’s great start to the season, recent results, and Milan’s defensive frailties we can’t see anything other than a win for Spalletti’s team and think there could be value in the -1 market.
