While we may be half way through the new campaign across Europe, that doesn’t mean we can’t sit back and appreciate the accomplishments of the 2020/21 season. We saw plenty of teams thrive and that was certainly true in Italy, with the Suppercoppa Italia helping to represent that. This week, the trophy will be contested by Serie A champions Inter Milan and Coppa Italia holders Juventus.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan have done a solid job of building on their title win across all sectors this season and this game will be a really interesting test of just how far they’ve come. They’re easily one of the most entertaining clubs to watch in world football and if they can put Juve to the sword, it’ll give them a big confidence boost heading into the remainder of the title race.

Darmian is set to feature for the first time this year with Calhanoglu also returning after serving his suspension. Elsewhere, Inter have no fresh injury problems to worry about.

Juventus

Juventus surrendered control of Italian football last season and in the current campaign, they’re really struggling to get a foothold – and if they aren’t careful, a sustained period of mediocrity could befall them. That sounds pretty dramatic but between their coaching changes and the state of their first team squad, we don’t think it’s all too outrageous.

Chiesa’s ACL injury means that his season has unfortunately come to an end with that being Juve’s only major injury concern. However, they do have to deal without Cuadrado and de Ligt who are both suspended.

Conclusion

This is really going to serve as more of a “showcase” than anything else with both clubs trying to make a real statement to the other ahead of the rest of the season. We expect to see goals flooding in left, right and centre with Inter getting the upper hand, likely by an outrageous scoreline of some kind. It’ll be close at times, but the gulf in quality between the two will really shine through.
