We’re starting to get down to the business end of the Champions League, which means that only the elite of the elite will be remaining when the quarter finals draw is made. Before all of that, though, we’ve got to get the Round of 16 over and done with – and one of the most intriguing second leg ties on the bill is going to be Juventus vs Atletico Madrid. The Spaniards hold a comfortable 2-0 win over The Old Lady from the first leg, but with a Ronaldo-led Juve giving it everything they’ve got, this one is far from over.
Juventus
It’s not over til it’s over as the saying goes, and that’s what Juve will choose to believe ahead of their huge tie against Atletico Madrid tomorrow. They came into this season with high expectations of walking through their competition, and while they’ve been able to do that in Serie A, Europe is a different story altogether. They’ve got a squad that would strike fear into the hearts of most teams across the continent, but sometimes, you get a club like Atletico that just doesn’t care about all of that noise.
Team News
Cuadrado and Khedira are both still out of action with Alex Sandro suspended, although Douglas Costa could return from a hamstring issue.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico have been waiting for their moment to get back to the final of the Champions League, and this season may be their best opportunity to finally get the job done. Their local rivals Real Madrid, who have beaten them in two UCL finals in the last few years, are now out of the competition – which has blown the race wide open. They shouldn’t be afraid of anyone remaining in the draw and that includes Juventus, as they’ve already proven they can beat the Italians.
Team News
Diego Godin is still suffering from a muscle problem which could rule him out of the tie against Juve, with Hernandez and Luis still being out.
Factors to Consider
- The game will be played at Juventus Stadium.
- Juventus have won five and lost one of their last six games.
- Atletico Madrid have won five and lost one of their last six games.
- Juventus have scored 13 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
- Atletico Madrid have scored nine goals in their last six games, keeping five consecutive clean sheets.
Conclusion
In some ways you could argue it’s a shame this match has happened at the Round of 16 phase, because both of these teams are capable of reaching the final this year. With that being said it certainly seems like Juve are going to throw everything against the wall in an attempt to pick up the win, and we do think they’ll win – but they won’t go through. We can see them edging ahead just after half time, but being unable to score a second goal which allows Atletico to progress into the quarter finals.
