Regardless of what anyone says or thinks, we’re pretty confident in saying that Italian football is on the rise. There are a lot of teams ready to make an impact on the European stage, especially after so many years of mediocrity. There was once a point in time where Italian sides were running riot at the top of the European game, but it just doesn’t feel like that’s the case anymore. For the game we’re looking at today, though, it’s all about establishing the true title favourite between Juventus and Napoli.
Juventus
As the most dominant team in Italian football by an absolute country mile, Juventus are going to be focusing a big portion of their attention on winning the Champions League this season. That isn’t to say they won’t go all out in an attempt to retain their Serie A title, but it already seems so unlikely that they’re not going to do that. They have contenders rising up in an attempt to dethrone them, but it’s going to take a while for them to do so – especially when you consider that there could be a few more new faces before the window shuts.
Team News
Matthijs de Ligt will continue to wait for his big debut, with Dybala not being set to feature for the home side until his future has been confirmed.
Napoli
Napoli are a gritty, physical team, and they’re a force to be reckoned with against any and all teams across European football. They do seem to be much more capable of picking up results at home than away from home, though, which could serve as a detriment to them. They still seem to be focusing a lot of their attention on the summer transfer window, meaning that we can’t really work out what kind of squad and starting XI they’re going to push for this season.
Team News
Milik is set to return after missing the Fiorentina game through injury, whereas Lozano will start on the bench after his big transfer.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting, Juventus beat Napoli 2-1 to strengthen their grip on the title.
- Juventus won their opening Serie A match 1-0 against Parma.
- Napoli won their opening Serie A match 4-3 against Fiorentina.
- Juventus finished in first place last season with 90 points.
- Napoli finished in second place last season with 79 points.
Conclusion
Napoli are going to put up a fight as they always do, but it seems bizarre to even consider looking past Juventus at such an early point in the campaign. They’ve got so much talent littered throughout their squad and while it may be a challenging game in which Napoli push the all the way, we’re confident in saying that the Old Lady will get the job done. There will be a few goals, though, and it’ll be interesting to see how Juventus stack up defensively with the summer transfer window being set to close imminently.
