Domestic football is set to get underway once again, as we prepare for another chaotic (yet tremendous) nine months of action. Today we’re going to be taking a look at the Scottish Premiership, as Celtic attempt to defend their title once again. The dominant champions will have to deal with the challenge of every team in the league, but more so than others, Kilmarnock and Rangers will serve as the sides that will chase them down the most – and this weekend, they’ll be going head to head.
Kilmarnock
While Killie haven’t quite started off the current season in the kind of manner they would’ve wanted, they certainly have a lot to build on following their success last time out. They’ve got a young and hungry squad that are ready to make an extended impact on the Scottish game, and while some fans and pundits may not think they can realistically challenge for the title, they certainly aren’t too far away. Now, they just need to get themselves off to the best possible start against one of their closest challengers.
Team News
It seems like Killie will have a fairly full strength squad to pick from, as they attempt to overcome the disappointment of their early Europa League exit.
Rangers
Rangers are going to come flying out of the blocks this season, as they get closer and closer towards dethroning Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership. They’ve got all the tools necessary to make a real go of it this time around, with arguably their biggest tool being Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool star has really been able to sink his teeth into this project, and now, it’s only a matter of time until Rangers become a force on both the European and domestic stage once again.
Team News
Morelos is expected to start up top for Rangers who will field a full strength team, as they continue to try and build on their early success in the Europa League this season.
Factors to Consider
- This game will mark the start of the 2019/20 Scottish Premiership season for both clubs.
- Kilmarnock finished in third place during last season’s Premiership campaign.
- Rangers finished in second place during last season’s Premiership campaign.
- Kilmarnock have played two games already this season, winning one and losing one.
- Rangers have played four games already this season, winning three and drawing one.
Conclusion
While all signs point towards Rangers getting off to the best possible start, we just don’t think that’s going to be what happens. Kilmarnock are gritty and they never give up in these big time matches, whereas Rangers have often let the pressure get to them. It’s certainly going to be a good one for the neutrals to watch because we’re expecting goals galore, but if you’re hoping for a clear challenger to emerge in the pushback against Celtic’s dominance, we just don’t think it’s going to happen on this night.
