The UEFA Champions League is back in our lives this week and fans are buckling up for an incredibly busy schedule between now and Christmas. There are clubs across the continent that will be scratching and clawing to try and qualify for the knockout stage of this great competition and they’ll be doing so in a pretty short period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at the clash between Lazio and Borussia Dortmund tomorrow night.

Lazio

Lazio looked good in their return to Serie A action last month, cruising to a 2-0 win over Cagliari. Unfortunately for them their confidence took a huge knock when they went toe to toe with Atalanta as they came up on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat. They did stem the flow with a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan but their defensive work let them down once again in a 3-0 loss to Sampdoria.

Team News

Immobile is set to come back into the starting XI after returning from suspension to take on his former club. Caicedo and Marusic have both recovered from respective injuries to feature, but elsewhere, there are problems as Felipe, Lulic, Lazzari, Escalante and Pereira will all be sidelined for this game.

Borussia Dortmund

A 5-0 cup win over Duisburg and a 3-0 success against Borussia Monchengladbach got Dortmund off to a positive start this season but they were stunned by Augsburg in the league before falling to a 3-2 loss against Bayern Munich in the German Supercup. They got back on the horse with a 4-0 win over Freiburg, and they made it four clean sheets in four games with a victory over Hoffenheim just two days ago.

Team News

Haaland is set to start for Dortmund after being rested at the weekend with Bellingham being tipped for a UCL debut at the age of just 17. Akanji is self isolating after testing positive for COVID-19, Hazard is a doubt and there are a handful of other injury problems for Dortmund to worry about including Schulz, Zagadou, Schmelzer and Piszczek.

Factors to Consider

  • The other two clubs in Group F are Club Brugge and Zenit St Petersburg.
  • Lazio have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
  • Dortmund have won four and lost two of their last six games.
  • Lazio have scored seven goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
  • Dortmund have scored 15 goals and conceded five in their last six games.

Conclusion

Lazio have struggled to get going so far this season and while the Champions League could serve as the perfect distraction for them, we don’t think they’ll be able to overcome the challenge of Borussia Dortmund. The German giants may not be the top dogs in the Bundesliga right now but they’re definitely good enough to register all three points here, and we think they’ll pull it off after a really entertaining encounter between two of Europe’s elite.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund win
