Desperate to make up some ground in the European chase this weekend. Lazio will welcome Frosinone to the Stadio Olimpico on Friday night.

Lazio

Starting with the hosts, managing to make a crucial return to winning ways last week, Lazio will be desperate to find some welcomed stability in the New Year. Eventually claiming a deserved 2-0 victory away at Empoli, that result drew a line under the Eagles’ three-match winless run across all competitions. However, despite signing off their Champions League group stage adventure with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Spanish giants Atletico Madrid on December 13th, Maurizio Sarri’s squad did shock many as they punched a knockout stage ticket. Now with their sights set on making up some ground in the top-six chase on Friday night, Lazio should be smelling a real opportunity here. It should also be highlighted, aside from a 2-0 defeat against Inter Milan earlier in the month, that is the only loss that Sarri’s men have suffered at the Stadio Olimpico since way back on August 27th.

Team News

Not making a single appearance since back on November 12th, Lazio will once again be without 28-year-old defender Alessio Romagnoli here. Likewise, still serving a three-match suspension, Sarri will be unable to call upon former SPAL midfielder Manuel Lazzari on Friday night.

Although attacking talisman Ciro Immobile might have failed to find the net in any of his previous six appearances across all competitions, the Italy international will spearhead Lazio’s charge at the Stadio Olimpico.

Frosinone

As for the visitors, while Frosinone might have sprung a famous Coppa Italia upset on December 19th as they claimed a 4-0 romp away at defending Italian champions Napoli, the Canaries are enduring a Serie A struggle. Last seen in top-flight action getting hit with a 2-1 loss at home against Juventus, Eusebio Di Francesco’s men have won just one of their previous six top-flight appearances. With some in their camp starting to look over their shoulder at a potential relegation scrap, the former Sampdoria boss should also be worried by a nightmare Serie A record on the road. Including a downbeat 2-1 defeat at the hands of Leece earlier in the month, Frosinone have lost all of their last six straight contests away from the Stadio Benito Stirpe – a run that stems all the way back to a 1-1 stalemate against Salernitana back on September 22nd.

Team News

Still dealing with a stacked injury list, As for the visitors, Frosinone will once again be unable to call upon the likes of Anthony Oyono, Luca Mazzitelli, Riccardo Marchizza and former Borussia Dortmund starlet Reinier.

Coming off the bench and bagging a consolation strike against Juventus last week, 28-year-old Jaime Baez Stabile could be handed a first Serie A start since the end of October. Impressing since arriving from AC Milan on a season-long loan switch, Marco Brescianini will once again have a leading role to play here.

Key Factors to Consider

    • When Lazio and Frosinone last met in Serie A action back in February 2019, Friday’s hosts collected a 1-0 victory at the Stadio Benito Stirpe.
    • Lazio have lost just one of their previous 11 straight showdowns at the Stadio Olimpico across all competitions.
    • Frosinone have lost all of their last six straight Serie A appearances on the road.
    • Likewise, the Canaries have shipped 15 strikes on that six-match losing run away from the Stadio Benito Stirpe.
    • All of Lazio’s last seven appearances across all competitions have finished with under 2.5 goals.

    Conclusion

Managing to make a welcomed return to winning ways last week as they clinched a 2-0 victory away at Empoli, Lazio will be desperate to use that performance as a platform to build on. Hoping to open the New Year with a statement on home soil, Sarri’s men should be confident of claiming back-to-back Serie A victories here. Suffering just a single loss at the Stadio Olimpico from their previous 11 appearances across all competitions, Lazio will be confident of cashing in on a Frosinone squad that have continued to show a string of top-flight issues on the road.

    Verdict: Lazio win

    Best Odds: 7/10
