The Premier League is back this weekend for the final set of fixtures before the next international break. The start of the new campaign has been far more unpredictable and exciting than even the most optimistic of fans could’ve imagined and at this stage, that can only be a good thing. Today we’re going to be taking a look at the highly anticipated contest between two of English football’s most exhilarating teams – Leeds United and Manchester City.
Leeds
Marcelo Bielsa has been able to breathe new life into the top flight with his Leeds side putting together some fantastic performances to start off the new season. They may have suffered defeat at the hands of Liverpool but they’ve bounced back with two wins from their last two league games, and even though many fans still think they need to have one eye on the relegation battle, they could be dark horses for a spot in the top half of the table.
Team News
There are a handful of injury problems for Leeds to deal with as Hernandez, Berardi, Forshaw and Casilla all out of action. Jack Harrison is ineligible to play against his parent club in a big blow for Bielsa.
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola will be well aware of the issues facing Manchester City right now and while it may seem as if things are fine within the club, the defeat to Leicester City reminded the masses of one important fact: they have some serious defensive issues that need to be resolved. Whether or not they push Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title could depend on their capabilities at the back, and that change will need to be steady and handled with care.
Team News
Gundogan won’t feature until after the international break despite his period of self isolation coming to an end. Elsewhere, Stones, Aguero, Jesus and Cancelo have all been ruled out through injury with Sterling being tipped to lead the line once again.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in 2013, Man City beat Leeds 4-0 in the FA Cup.
- Leeds have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Man City have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Leeds have scored 16 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
- Man City have scored 13 goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
Conclusion
This could descend into a one-sided massacre if Leeds don’t keep things tight at the back but above that is the realisation that we’re going to see some phenomenal football on display at Elland Road. Leeds will go out with the intention to give City a bloody nose in the early exchanges and we do feel like they could take the lead, but Pep will be eager to prove a point against Bielsa. It’ll be close, but the visitors will come away with all three points.
