International tournaments have been and gone and in their place, we have the return of the domestic game across Europe and beyond. English football, in particular, is going to have plenty of eyes fixated on it over the course of the next few months as things get underway across the nation. Today, we’re going to take a look at what should be a fascinating clash of styles in the Community Shield between Leicester City and Manchester City.
Leicester
Leicester may not have achieved their ultimate dream of securing Champions League football last season but they did add another incredible chapter to their recent journey by winning the FA Cup. They’re starting to establish themselves as a major force in this country and after finishing in the top six for the third time in the last six years, we may need to have a conversation about them replacing Arsenal in the “big six” debate.
Team News
The big injury absences here are Evans, Justin, Castagne and Fofana with the latter being stretchered off after a horrible challenge from a Villarreal player. Elsewhere, Schmeichel is set to make his competitive return after an impressive Euros with Denmark.
Manchester City
Manchester City have an absolutely unbelievable squad and, unsurprisingly, we still think they’re one of the best teams in world football. That could always be proven wrong as we look ahead to the new campaign but with Pep Guardiola in charge, just about anything is possible for this club. They’re sharp, they’re decisive on and off the ball, and they rarely give us reason to doubt them on the pitch – which is a trend we expect to continue.
Team News
Phil Foden will miss out due to a foot injury but the main story here is going to be Jack Grealish who could make his debut just days after signing from Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Walker, Stones, De Bruyne, Rodri, Sterling, Torres and Zinchenko are all doubts due to their involvement in Euro 2020.
Conclusion
With City having their eyes set on the domestic prize and Leicester wanting to make yet another big statement at Wembley, we actually think the Foxes are in with a really good chance of winning this. They’re still one of the strongest sides in the league and City will be trying to find their feet with a new look squad. Brendan Rodgers’ men, in our opinion, want this more, and that’s why we’re tipping them for a narrow 1-0 win in normal time.
