The final countdown is upon us as the Premier League season is set to come to an end on Sunday afternoon. There’s still a lot up for grabs in the top flight with just one set of fixtures remaining, including the relegation scrap and the battle for sixth. Most importantly, though, we still need to figure out who will be representing England in next season’s UEFA Champions League competition. This weekend, Leicester City and Manchester United will square off, knowing that the winner is guaranteed to qualify.
Leicester
Prior to the restart it seemed as if Leicester City were all but assured of a place in the Champions League next season, and yet now, they find themselves needing to get a result against United despite leading the race for months. Brendan Rodgers would’ve jumped at this scenario when the campaign first started, but when you consider how poorly they’ve played for the majority of 2020, it makes you wonder whether or not he’ll even be able to see out the year as manager if this form continues.
Team News
There are plenty of absences for Foxes fans to worry about heading into this game with Albrighton being a doubt and Soyuncu still being out through suspension. Plus, the following players are still on the shelf due to injury: Amartey, Chilwell, Pereira and Maddison.
Manchester United
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows that his team simply needs to avoid defeat at Old Trafford, and that’ll be enough for the club to return to the UCL. They could’ve, and probably should’ve, had this wrapped up in the last few weeks, but they’ve had a few questionable results littered in with some of their biggest wins. That kind of inconsistency could come back to haunt them, especially when you consider just how tired they looked against West Ham.
Team News
Shaw is a doubt due to a recent ankle injury whereas Bailly, Jones and Tuanzebe are the confirmed absences for the visitors.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in September, Man United beat Leicester 1-0.
- Leicester have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Man United have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Leicester have scored eight goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
- Man United have scored 14 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
Conclusion
We think this is going to be a pretty tense game to start off with, as both teams feel each other out and wait to see whether or not Chelsea will be the ones to blink first in their game against Wolves. In the end, though, despite both clubs going through the motions and struggling through some tough times in recent weeks, we think it’ll be United that secure the three points and end Leicester’s Champions League push. It’ll be tight, and we expect something like a fortunate penalty will be enough to win it.
