After 30 long years, Liverpool Football Club will finally lift the trophy that confirms their status as the Champions of England tomorrow night. Before the festivities can begin, though, there’s the small matter of trying to beat Chelsea and dent their top four aspirations. Frank Lampard’s men are well aware of the fact that a victory here will confirm their Champions League status next season, but with Liverpool only losing three league games all season, it isn’t exactly going to be easy.
Liverpool
The 4-0 win over Crystal Palace set Jurgen Klopp’s side up perfectly for the title win, but they didn’t exactly hide the extent of their week-long celebrations as they were battered 4-0 by Manchester City in the very next game. They bounced back with consecutive wins over Aston Villa and Brighton, only to come unstuck in a 1-1 draw against Burnley. Then, their poor form at the Emirates continued as they were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal to end their hopes of recording the Premier League’s highest points total ever.
Team News
The two big injury absences are Matip and Henderson, with many wondering what the logistics will be regarding the latter lifting the trophy. Lovren and Milner are also doubts for this one, whereas Keita is hoping to make an appearance in the starting XI.
Chelsea
Chelsea haven’t been without their own set of mistakes since the restart, with one of the biggest being their 3-2 humbling at the hands of West Ham. They edged their way back into contention with back-to-back wins over Watford and Crystal Palace, only to fall short in a big way against Sheffield United. They then narrowly beat already-relegated Norwich at Stamford Bridge, prior to a 3-1 triumph over Manchester United that helped them book their place in the 2020 FA Cup Final.
Team News
Kante wasn’t fit enough for the game against United and probably won’t be in good enough shape to start here, with Pulisic being set to re-enter the side. Elsewhere, Tomori and Gilmour have both been ruled out of the game due to injury.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in early March, Chelsea knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup.
- Liverpool have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Chelsea have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Liverpool have scored 11 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
- Chelsea have scored 12 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
We’ve seen a far more lethargic Liverpool in recent weeks now that they’ve already confirmed their status as champions, and we’re expecting that trend to continue here. Chelsea are well aware of the fact that they can get at the Reds, and it’s just about picking their moments. We do think they’re going to be slightly anxious given the understandable stakes involved in their Champions League push, but at the end of it, we think they’ll come away from Anfield with a well-earned point.
