Football fans are in for something of a special treat this week as we get some Premier League action under the lights as opposed to just at the weekend. There are many, many different ways in which this could go as teams from top to bottom battle it out to try and gain a foothold in whatever race they’re running this season. We’re going to be taking a look at one of the biggest nights of the year on Merseyside, as Liverpool prepare to go toe to toe with local rivals Everton at Anfield.
Liverpool
When you’re eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table at search an early point of the campaign, it’s understandable to see that there’s going to be a lot of excitement – because that’s only natural. With Liverpool, though, because they’ve been waiting so long for another league title, it almost feels as if the fans aren’t going to start believing until the trophy is in the hands of Jordan Henderson. Given the circumstances, that seems like the smartest way of approaching this.
Team News
Adrian will start following Alisson’s red card at the weekend with Fabinho, Clyne and Matip all still being out of action through injury.
Everton
Marco Silva’s future at Goodison Park is in serious jeopardy as the club linger tantalisingly close to the bottom three. While it doesn’t feel like a relegation battle is particularly likely for them this season, a change in management is desperately needed if they want to avoid that fate. A resounding defeat here could spell the end of the road for his tenure at the club, so at the very least, he needs to hope that his side put in a decent enough shift to warrant a stay of execution.
Team News
Gbamin, Martina and Gomes are all still out with injuries, with the other doubts within the squad being the fitness of Coleman, Delph and Walcott who will all be assessed prior to kick-off.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in March, Everton & Liverpool drew 0-0.
- Liverpool have won five and drawn one of their last six games.
- Everton have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Liverpool have scored 12 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Everton have scored eight goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
You can often throw the rule book out of the window when it comes to derby day, but we just don’t think that’s going to be the case at Anfield this week. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 19 games against their bitter rivals and they’re performing better than they have done in years. The Toffees will try and give as good as they get which is the least you can expect from them, but Klopp’s men know that there is a huge opportunity for them to build up some more momentum heading into 2020.
