Prediction: Liverpool vs Manchester City

The Premier League title race looks set to go to the wire regardless of the outcome of the potential title-decider at Anfield, but a team that win on Sunday afternoon will be in excellent position to lift the title in month’s time. A seven-match winning run and home field advantage could give Liverpool an extra edge, whilst Manchester City are buoyed by the timely return of Sergio Aguero.

With just five games to go, Liverpool sit two points clear at the Premier League summit, having scored 90 goals and conceded 40 in 33 games, and this is definitely not the situation the Reds expected to be in before the season started. Nevertheless, the Anfield outfit have thoroughly deserved their league position with some stunning showings both home and away and they will be determined not to squander this amazing opportunity to win their first league trophy since 1990. Having been averaging almost three goals per game, the Reds are well aware that formidable attack is their biggest strength and it is highly unlikely they will be changing their approach a great deal in spite of the importance of the match. And with their back line not really capable of stopping Manchester City from scoring, chances are we will see a highly entertaining game at Anfield. The hosts should have Daniel Agger back from a knee problem, while Joe Allen could be drafted into the side if Rodgers opts for a 4-3-3 formation. Jose Enrique remains the only unavailable player as he is out through a knee injury.

Even if they sit in third place at the moment, Manchester City can still be regarded as favourites to lift the Premiership trophy, mostly because they have two games in hand on their title rivals. The Citizens have already won the Capital One Cup title this term and another major trophy would ensure this season is regarded as a success. While suffering some slip-ups along the way, Manchester City have shown a great deal of consistency, while doing well to cope with some important absences in spite of the lack of strength in depth. Had Sergio Aguero enjoyed an injury-free season, the Citizens would probably be sitting well clear of their rivals at the top of the standings, but the Argentine instead missed a big chunk of the league campaign. Nevertheless, he has returned just in time to play at Anfield, having trained this week without any problems. And since the Argentine is the type of player who usually makes an instant impact when returning from injury, the Citizens are rightly relying on him to prove the difference on Sunday afternoon. Yaya Toure has shaken off a minor problem, but Matija Nastasic is still on the sidelines.

Conclusion

This match looks too close to call, but with both managers ready to unleash their world-class attackers, we could easily see goals galore at Anfield. Title-deciders are rarely high-scoring games, but this particular match is likely to prove exception to the rule.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals
