It’s been one of the most intriguing weekends of the Premier League season so far, but now, we re-focus our attention on the UEFA Champions League which will be returning to our screens in the next few days. The top clubs littered across Europe will be battling it out, with the winners taking another step towards the knockout stage of the competition. Today, we’re going to be focusing on a game that will see the holders of the trophy attempt to bounce back as Liverpool go head to head with Red Bull Salzburg.
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp’s side are widely considered to be one of the top three clubs in the world these days, and rightly so. They’ve been able to assemble a squad that just seems to strike the right chord every single time they’re out there. Some pundits have suggested that they will be focusing most of their attention on what happens in the Premier League this season as they haven’t won England’s top flight in many years, but they’ll still be eager to put in a solid shift in Europe.
Team News
Adrian could maintain his place in the team despite Alisson nearing full fitness. Origi could return in some form, but Clyne and Shaqiri are still out. Mane is expected to play against his former side.
Salzburg
Red Bull Salzburg are on top of the world in the early stages of the new season, and while there’s still a long way to go, there is some real hope that they can do some big things in Europe over the next few months. They’re riding a lot of momentum as we look ahead to this encounter between them and Liverpool, and in a lot of ways, they don’t really have all too much to lose. They’ll go to Merseyside with no major fear, and nor should they given what they did on matchday one.
Team News
Hee-Chan will lead the way for Salzburg alongside Haaland, with Bernede being out due to an injury he suffered at the weekend.
Factors to Consider
- Salzburg are currently top of their UCL group, whereas Liverpool are third.
- Liverpool have won five and lost one of their last six games.
- Salzburg have won five and drawn one of their last six games.
- Liverpool have scored 11 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
- Salzburg have scored 26 goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
Conclusion
Salzburg have started the season like a house on fire, and as such, there’s a lot of hype behind them both domestically and in European competition. While we think they’ll give the Reds a pretty good game at their own home, we just can’t picture Klopp’s men bowing down to the Austrians at Anfield. The visitors may score but in the end they’ll get blown away by Liverpool’s ruthless attacking prowess, confirming what we all already know: they’re contenders for the crown once again.
