Liverpool host Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon in what’s expected to be a thrilling clash. We make our prediction on an important match in terms of Champions League qualification.

Liverpool

Both teams will be well aware of the importance of this match on Sunday if they want to qualify for next season’s Champions League. After their shock defeat to Swansea City and their humiliating exit from the FA Cup to West Bromwich Albion, Liverpool managed to recover by beating Huddersfield in midweek. The result put them into third place in the Premier League, two points clear of Tottenham who sit just outside the top four. In truth, the defeat to the Swans was their first one in 16 league games and they will be buoyed by the fact they’re unbeaten in 12 matches at Anfield. Mo Salah has been a complete revelation this season and he grabbed another goal in midweek to make it 27 in all competitions. The Egyptian seems to have struck a deep understanding with Roberto Firmino and they’ll have to be at their very best if they’re to gain three vital points for their side against a Tottenham Hotspur team in form.

Team News

Virgil Van Dijk could return for Liverpool after being rested.

Meanwhile, Adam Lallana could miss the match with Jurgen Klopp not willing to risk aggravating the midfielder’s muscle injury.

Tottenham Hotspur

After a magnificent win against Manchester United in midweek, Tottenham Hotspur now find themselves fifth in the Premier League and two points behind Chelsea in fourth. It seems that Mauricio Pochettino’s men have eradicated their Wembley hoodoo but they’re now struggling to win on the road. They’ve tasted victory in just two of their last seven matches away and they know they’ll have to improve on this record if they’re to qualify for next season’s Champions League. One area of their game that they don’t seem to have a problem is scoring goals, and the Lilywhites have now netted in each of their last 13 league matches. Harry Kane has been the main reason for this and incredibly he’s only one goal shy from the Premier League 100 club at just 24 years of age. The match on Sunday could turn into a shootout between the highest scorers in the league disregarding Manchester City, and with a plethora of talent on show, we could be in for a thriller.

Team News

Harry Winks, Serge Aurier (both ankle) and Toby Alderweirald  (hamstring) could all miss the match.

However, Lucas Moura will be hoping for a start after his £25m move from PSG.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Liverpool have only lost one of their last 23 matches against Tottenham (W15 D7)
  • Spurs have only lost more matches at Old Trafford (21) than they have at Anfield (16)
  • The Reds are unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League games at home
  • Spurs have won seven points from their last nine available on the road
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 home league matches against the ‘big six’ (W6 D6)

Conclusion

With an array of attacking talent on display and both teams needing to win in order to improve their chances of a top-four finish, we’re hoping there could be goals galore on Sunday.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals

Best Odds: 4/7
