The Ligue 1 campaign is continuing on after a short break for a series of internationals to take place, and while Paris Saint-Germain may be running away with it right now, that doesn’t mean every other team in the league is simply going to lay down and accept defeat. Today, we’re going to take a look at what should be a fascinating clash between Lyon and Marseille.
Lyon
Lyon have fallen off the wagon ever so slightly this season but after a poor start, they’re beginning to piece everything back together. They’ve still got some superstar names within their squad but only now are they looking like a team who can not only keep others out, but cause some problems going forward. It’ll be tough for them to claw their way back into European contention, but not impossible.
Team News
Denayer and Reine-Adelaide are both viewed as doubts with the club’s insanely long list of absences reading as follows: Aouar, Kadewere, Da Silva, Faivre, Ndombele, Slimani, Debele, Ekambi and Paqueta.
Marseille
Marseille have a nice, balanced squad with a rabid fanbase – but with the expectations being so high for what they can achieve, it can be easy to get lost in the madness of it all. We’re expecting to see them flourish for the next few months before eventually slowing down heading into April and May, especially if they don’t fix their questionable home form.
Team News
De la Fuente is a fitness doubt with the following players on the shelf: Kolasinac, Bakambu, Gonzalez, Gerson, Gueye and Dieng.
Factors to Consider
- Lyon are 11th in the Ligue 1 table whereas Marseille are 3rd.
- Lyon have won two and drawn four of their last six games.
- Marseille have won three and drawn three of their last six games.
- Lyon have scored five goals and conceded three in their last six games.
- Marseille have scored nine goals and conceded three in their last six games.
Conclusion
Both sides are starting to find their feet in terms of consistency and we think this is all going to be about whether or not Lyon can push Marseille back and hold them to a slightly lower standard in the final third. It should be quite an interesting back and forth but in the end, we’re going to back both sides to get on the scoresheet and both sides to share the spoils – ending in a 1-1 draw.
