As millions around the world continue to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, one slice of normality has remained the same – sport. We’re now in a new year and that means we’re going to be experiencing a whole lost of games coming at us thick and fast between now and May, which is especially true in the English Premier League. Today, we’re going to take a look at a fixture that will serve as a top of the table vs bottom of the table encounter – Manchester City vs Sheffield United.
Manchester City
It’s hard to remember the last time Manchester City lost a game of football and if that isn’t a sign they’re the frontrunners in the title race, we’re not sure what is. They just seem to be functioning at a much higher level than the rest of the league right now and if recent history has taught us anything, it’s that we probably won’t see that slow down anytime soon. They’re well-organised, they’re structured, and they are coming for every single piece of silverware they can get their hands on.
Team News
Aguero is still unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19, De Bruyne and Ake have been ruled out through injury and Walker looks set to return to the starting XI.
Sheffield United
After seemingly being dead and buried for months on end, Sheffield United are starting to rise like a phoenix with four wins in their last five games across the FA Cup and Premier League. Chris Wilder always knew that this team is far better than the performances they had been putting out, and even if they do wind up getting relegated, you can bet they’re going to go down swinging.
Team News
While the good times are coming back for United there are still plenty of issues they have within their squad, especially now that Bryan is a fitness doubt alongside Stevens after his goalscoring exploits against the Red Devils. They may wind up joining the following players on the sideline: Berge, Robinson, O’Connell, Osborn and McBurnie.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting on Halloween, Man City beat Sheff United 1-0.
- Man City have won their last 11 games in all competitions.
- Sheff United have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Man City have scored 18 goals and conceded one in their last six games.
- Sheff United have scored nine goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
The Blades were able to really prove themselves against Manchester United, and yet while we do think their style is going to cause City some problems, Pep’s men should have more than enough to overcome this challenge. It isn’t going to be easy and this is likely to be one of their most physical games of the season but when push comes to shove, the quality within the home side’s ranks should get them through with a narrow victory.
