We have a brand new year that will be upon us in a matter of as we bid goodbye to one decade and say hello to another. It’s going to be a fascinating time for us all, especially in the world of football, but we’re not quite done yet with 2019. There are still a handful of games that need to be played with one of them being set for the Etihad as Manchester City host Sheffield United. Both have had interesting seasons, but both will feel like there’s so much more they can give.
Manchester City
The loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers has certainly thrown a spanner into the works regarding what could be next for Manchester City, with many choosing to believe that the title race is dead and buried. We don’t think it’s quite as dramatic as that, because Liverpool only need to slip up once or twice for City to start believing that they can chase them down. As it is, though, City need to be looking at the rest of the campaign and thinking that they have to win every single game in the league.
Team News
Sane, Laporte, Stones and Ederson are all out through either injury or suspension with David Silva and Jesus being doubts for City.
Sheffield United
Chris Wilder’s men are at a point now where European football is a serious possibility, and that’s about as exciting as it gets for a team like Sheffield United. They are situated perfectly to make a surge for the top six, and who knows, perhaps even beyond that. They have a strong structure throughout the spine of their squad and they continue to fly under the radar. It’s going to be really interesting to see how they fare between now and May.
Team News
Simon Moore is the only doubt for Sheffield United who should have a fully fit squad to choose from for their trip up to Manchester.
Factors to Consider
- These two sides have not played since 2008 in the FA Cup when Sheffield United won 2-1.
- Man City have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Sheff United have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Man City have scored 16 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
- Sheff United have scored seven goals and conceded five in their last six games.
Conclusion
The masses will continue to back Manchester City as a direct result of just how good they can be when they perform to the best of their abilities, and that’s what we’re going to do here. City are too strong and while Sheffield United are capable of frustrating them and potentially even nabbing a goal, Pep Guardiola will not allow this side to lose back to back Premier League games at this stage of the campaign. They’ll win, and they will do so convincingly at the Etihad.
