Prediction: Manchester City vs Stoke

13th May 2011

Both sides enter the highly anticipated clash in great spirits, which should guarantee us en entertaining FA Cup final. Manchester City have an opportunity to make a good season even better by winning their first trophy in the new era, whereas the Potters are considered underdogs here, but they clearly have no problems wearing that tag.

Following some heavy spending over the last couple of years, Manchester City entered this season with high expectations, but they were soon forced to readjust their objectives. The Citizens needed a lot of time to gel, with Roberto Mancini the only one to blame for that, although they have shown a lot of improvement in the crucial stage of the season. The early exit from Europa League proved to be a blessing in disguise as it gave the Citizens an advantage over Tottenham in their fight for the top 4 finish, with Spurs losing the ground after the draining Champions League campaign. With the Champions League qualification already in the bag, Roberto Mancini’s side will be looking to win their first trophy since 1976, but there is no doubt star-studded City will be in for a difficult task against hard-tackling Stoke. Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry should return to the starting line-up, but Kolo Toure remains unavailable.

Even though they were not expected to survive the first season in the Premiership, let alone the first three, Stoke managed to establish themselves as genuine mid table side and they have only Tony Pulis to thank for that. It is really amazing how the gaffer manages to get so much out of the pretty average squad, but that is exactly what makes Pulis one of the best managers in the Premiership. The Potters have not only easily ensured Premiership survival for the third year running, but they managed to reach the FA Cup final following some impressive performances in the competition, namely the 5:0 semi-final win over high-flying Bolton. Having done so much this season and going into the game on the back of yet another victory over Arsenal, Stoke should by no means be underestimated and I certainly believe they stand a good chance against City, especially if Robert Huth and Matthew Etherington recover in time to start the game.

Conclusion

Manchester City are expected to take the initiative at Wembley, but Roberto Mancini’s side will struggle to create openings against defence-minded Stoke side, so I can see this game going into extra time. Therefore, my advice is to bet on draw.

Verdict: Draw (X)

Best Odds: 13/5

Bookmaker: Victor Chandler
