For the final time in November, the Premier League is back this weekend for a whole host of fixtures that will set us on the road to a lively winter period. There are plenty of games to work our way through and with the midweek slots starting next week, there’s no telling what’s going to happen between now and the new year. Today, we’re going to take a look at a clash between two of the best sides in English football right now – Manchester City and West Ham United.
Manchester City
While they may not have an “out and out” striker that they can rely on, Manchester City simply do not need one in order to thrive at the highest level. They’ve got a system in place that allows them to break teams down from the back and through the spine of their first team, but the most important factor in all that is how they start the game. If they can get off on the front foot, they’re off to the races more often than not.
Team News
De Bruyne is expected to return to the starting XI during the week and will have a rest for this one. Foden and Grealish are currently viewed as fitness doubts with the only confirmed injury absence being Ferran Torres.
West Ham
The David Moyes experiment is turning into quite the David Moyes success story in East London. West Ham United are thriving on all fronts but as we saw in their loss to Wolves, this wave of momentum can sometimes lead to complacency. They can’t afford to drop their guard for even a second in this league but luckily for their fanbase, we don’t think there’s any threat of them doing that against a side like City.
Team News
Antonio and Fabianski were rested during the week and will almost certainly feature at the Etihad. Ogbonna has been ruled out through injury with Coufal likely to sit out after playing in the Europa League.
Factors to Consider
- Man City are 2nd in the Premier League whereas West Ham are 4th.
- Man City have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- West Ham have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Man City have scored 11 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
- West Ham have scored 11 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
Conclusion
Pep Guardiola understands the pattern of just about every team in this league and while we do think West Ham are going to come straight at City from the word go, we think their measured approach is going to be broken down by the methodical nature of Manchester City’s potent attack. It’s going to be steady, calculated and efficient, ending in City walking away with a comfortable 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
