You know it’s getting to the business end of the calendar year when we start seeing midweek fixtures in the Premier League. The next few weeks are set to feature a whole lot of carnage in England’s top flight as we commence the always-hectic winter schedule. The big game this week, in the eyes of many, will see Manchester United and Arsenal revive their rivalry for the world to see on Thursday night.

Manchester United

It’s the beginning of a brand new era for Manchester United Football Club. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left and in his place, Ralf Rangnick is ready to give the Red Devils the injection of life they’ve been waiting for. It’s going to take time for him to implement the ideas he believes will turn things around but at the very least, the future is looking brighter than it was just a few short weeks ago.

Team News

Varane, Pogba and Cavani have been ruled out through injury with Shaw being a fitness doubt. Rangnick is technically in charge of this one but until his work permit issues are resolved, Carrick will be the one on the touchline.

Arsenal

Arsenal may have had a few down moments this season but they’re already resembling a team that’s more than capable of bouncing back. They’ve got some real star power within their ranks and Mikel Arteta has them playing like a team that believes they can break back into the top four. It’ll take time, but we’re intrigued to see how the process evolves as we head into the chaotic winter period.

Team News

Kolasinac and Xhaka have both been ruled out through injury with the only other fitness concerns, as of this writing, being Balogun and Saka.

Factors to Consider

  • Man United are 8th in the Premier League whereas Arsenal are 5th.
  • Man United have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
  • Arsenal have won five and lost one of their last six games.
  • Man United have scored nine goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
  • Arsenal have scored 10 goals and conceded five in their last six games.

Conclusion

We don’t expect this to be a classic by any stretch with both sides likely approaching this one with real caution – and we don’t blame them. If any side is going to go for it then it’ll probably be Arsenal and even in that instance, Rangnick should be prepared for whatever is thrown at him, even at such an early stage of his tenure. In terms of an official prediction, we’re going to go with a somewhat drab 0-0.
