The Premier League is back once again after some intriguing midweek action in the League Cup for 32 clubs up and down the country – and up and down the top four tiers of English football. Two sides who came up on the wrong end of a result in the third round are Manchester United and Aston Villa and this weekend, the pair will collide at Old Trafford in what will serve as one of two early kick-offs in the top flight on Saturday.
Manchester United
Manchester United may have gone out of the cup but the fun is only just beginning for their fans in what promises to be an eventful season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. They’ve already been through some real wars of attrition in a similar manner to the final few years of Alex Ferguson’s tenure in charge but if they want to take it that one step further and challenge for the title, they can’t afford to let teams get too far ahead of them in the early stages of games.
Team News
Cavani is a fitness doubt for this one with Rashford and Diallo out through injury – although Henderson, Jones and Telles are all back to full fitness.
Aston Villa
The expectations were high for Aston Villa coming into the new campaign given how well they’d done in the summer transfer market by replacing Jack Grealish with a host of fresh new faces. Alas, that didn’t quite translate onto the pitch in their first few league games with many wondering whether or not they’d fall way below expectations. Thankfully for Dean Smith those talks have eased off slightly after they were able to get back to winning ways against Everton last weekend.
Team News
Tuanzebe is ineligible to face his parent club with Smith now being left to decide who replaces him – if anyone. McGinn, Targett and Bailey both all have knocks they may not recover from in time for the trip with Trezeguet, Davis and Sanson all ruled out.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in May, Man United beat Aston Villa 2-1.
- Man United have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Aston Villa have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Man United have scored nine goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Aston Villa have scored 13 goals and conceded five in their last six games.
Conclusion
Villa are going to give United troubles and that much seems obvious based on the start both teams have had – but the question is whether or not the Red Devils can pull another rabbit out of the hat. There will come a time in which they run out of chances to get that memorable comeback win but in this instance, we still think they’ve got too many attacking options to do anything other than edge past the Midlanders in dramatic fashion tomorrow.
