The Premier League is back once again in the wake of the international break with all 20 clubs wanting to come flying out of the blocks as we venture into the second month of the season. There are plenty of intriguing fixtures taking place over the weekend from the stacked Saturday 3pm line-up to the TV games, with one of the most fascinating being the ‘return of Ronaldo’ when Manchester United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Manchester United
Manchester United are hoping this season can provide them with the platform they need to stage a legitimate title push at the top of the Premier League table. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been able to assemble a team that is more than capable of doing just that during the summer transfer window, and now it’s just a case of fixing any lingering problems in the middle of the park as their quest for silverware continues.
Team News
Rashofrd, Telles, Jones and Fred are all out with McTominay and Sancho being fitness doubts – but the big news is the impending return of the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo who is expected to start.
Newcastle
The reign of Steve Bruce has been a fairly turbulent one and as each passing week goes by, it feels more and more likely that he’s eventually going to get the sack. That may sound like a harsh way of phrasing things but that’s the reality most Magpies have to deal with, and it may not be the worst thing either. They’re already out of the League Cup, they look set for another relegation battle, and their star players aren’t being used to the best of their abilities.
Team News
Dubravka, Shelvey, Fraser, Darlow and Almiron are all out with the latter facing a ban under FIFA regulations. Hayden, Dummett and Wilson are fitness concerns ahead of Newcastle’s biggest game of the season thus far.
Factors to Consider
- Man United are 3rd in the Premier League whereas Newcastle are 17th.
- Man United have won three and drawn one of their first four games.
- Newcastle have drawn two and lost two of their first four games.
- Man United have scored 11 goals and conceded two in their first four games.
- Newcastle have scored four goals and conceded eight in their first four games.
Conclusion
This feels like more of a foregone conclusion than most fixtures this weekend and we’d stick a lot of money on Manchester United picking up all three points with relative ease. The Red Devils are at home, they’re in form, and their main man is set for his second debut with the club. Newcastle have the ability to pop up with a surprise or two but we don’t think anything quite so dramatic will occur tomorrow, which is why we’re backing a 2-0 win for the hosts.
