The hectic nature of European football this season means that we are once again gearing up for another week of UEFA Champions League action. We’re half way through the group stage now and while many groups already seem to have a clear direction in terms of who will qualify, the same cannot be said for Group H. Today, we’re going to preview the impending clash between two sides that are separated by one place and just three points – Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United
A handful of hard-fought wins seem to have eased the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the time being but as we look ahead to an absolutely stacked month of football for the Red Devils, there’s no time to celebrate. If they can win this group and qualify for the knockout stage then it’ll serve as another huge weight off of the manager’s shoulders, and in equal measure, it’ll free them up to focus on getting their top four push back on track.
Team News
The list of problems for United is quite worrying with Shaw, Tuanzebe, Jones, Rojo and Romero all being ruled out, and on the flip side, Martial, Pogba, Telles, Bailly, de Gea and McTominay are all injury doubts.
Paris Saint-Germain
They may be top of Ligue 1, but this is a far cry from the PSG team we saw reach the Champions League final just a few months ago. It’s obvious to see that their primary goal is still to become Champions of Europe but based on what they’ve produced in the competition so far this season, we don’t think they’re coming to even come close. Still, there’s plenty of time to turn thing around, but they do need to start that trend at Old Trafford.
Team News
There are some issues for PSG to contend with too as Neymar and Marquinhos are both doubts for the big trip to England. Plus, the following names will all miss out through injury: Draxler, Bernat, Kehrer, Sarabia and Icardi.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in October, Man United beat PSG 2-1.
- Man United have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- PSG have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Man United have scored 12 goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- PSG have scored 12 goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
Conclusion
This is bound to be another tight encounter as it always seems to be between these two giants of European football, but this time, we just feel as if PSG will dig deep enough to come away with the win. The French champions will know how much is riding on this game whereas United are in a slightly more comfortable position, and even though we don’t think the visitors will blow Ole’s men out of the water, we do expect them to edge it.
