We’re just two weeks away from the Premier League coming to its natural conclusion for the current campaign, and yet, there’s still a whole lot left to settle both at the top and bottom of the division. It certainly isn’t the same kind of game without the fans in attendance, but two teams that have been able to step up to the plate are Manchester United and Southampton. On Monday night, the two in-form sides will square off at Old Trafford in a huge encounter for both clubs.
Manchester United
Everyone seemed to be unanimous in their criticism of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer towards the end of 2019 and the start of 2020, but ever since the restart, he has been able to prove why he is the right man for the job. United are playing some of the best football they’ve played in years, and while there definitely a few factors that stand out above the rest in regards to why exactly that is the case, all United fans will care about is that they look set to play in the UEFA Champions League once again next season.
Team News
Tuanzebe and Jones are the two injury absences for the Red Devils, whereas Lindelof is expected to feature after his return against Aston Villa. Elsewhere, United are hoping that Wan-Bissaka and Matic will be back to full fitness.
Southampton
In a similar manner to how Solskjaer was ridiculed, Ralph Hasenhuttl was consistently viewed as someone who simply wasn’t capable of succeeding with the Saints after a questionable start to life on the South Coast. Now, though, they’re looking towards a pretty bright future, with their hope being that they can secure a top half finish to give them a nice surge of momentum as we prepare for a quick turnaround leading into the anticipated 2020/21 season.
Team News
Hojbjerg is expected to push Romeu for a place in the starting XI, with the injured quartet being confirmed as Boufal, Valery, Vestergaard and Djenepo.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in August, Southampton and Man United drew 1-1.
- Man United have won five and drawn one of their last six games.
- Southampton have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Man United have scored 17 goals and conceded four in their last six games.
- Southampton have scored eight goals and conceded five in their last six games.
Conclusion
Southampton are fluid when moving forward and know how to get at teams, as they were able to showcase against Manchester City – and if they can get at the former champions like that, they can certainly catch United off guard too. The problem they’re going to find is that this Manchester United team is so incredibly impressive up top, so if this does turn into the kind of firefight we’re expecting, there’s surely only going to be one outcome: and that’s the hosts picking up the three points.
