The FA Cup is already back in our lives in the form of third round replays, and while the debate on the nature of replays rages on, we have a series of games to get through before we can start to look ahead to the fourth round and beyond. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers as the two Premier League juggernauts both attempt to edge their way into the next round following a dull 0-0 draw at Molineux.
Manchester United
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer steadied the ship with the win over Norwich, but aside from that, there are still plenty of questions as to whether or not they can build up some much needed consistency in their campaign to finish in the top four. As opposed to fans focusing on what the club can do to improve during the January transfer window, though, they should instead be looking at what’s happening on the pitch and why the team is struggling from a lack of cohesion.
Team News
With a trip to Anfield on the horizon this could prove to be a weakened side for United with Pogba, Rojo, Tuanzebe & Young all out whereas Shaw, Lingard and even Rashford are doubts.
Wolves
Wolves need more bodies in their squad and that should be overriding any conversations about how great their current team may be. Yes, they’ve secured some great results so far this season and they’re doing really well in both the Premier League and Europa League, but there will come a time when that starts to evaporate. On the pitch, though, their performance in the first outing against United in the cup showed that they aren’t really all too invested in the FA Cup this season.
Team News
Diogo Jota is the big injury concern for Wolves but aside from that, Nuno has a full squad to choose from at Old Trafford.
Factors to Consider
- Due to the draw at Molineux, Wolves are now unbeaten in their last five games against Manchester United.
- Manchester United have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Wolves have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
- Manchester United have scored 11 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Wolves have scored seven goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
Conclusion
We don’t hold out much hope that this game is going to be much more exciting than their clash at Molineux, but of course, we’re guaranteed to get a definitive result this time one way or the other. We think United are going to be able to churn out the win, mainly because their strength in depth is ever so slightly better than Wolves’ strength in depth. It’s probably going to be a narrow win for the Red Devils, but as we all know, a win is a win regardless of how you get it at this level.
