The Gold Cup is one of the lesser known competitions when it comes to the international stage, but given some of the nations that are involved, we’d suggest it’s still pretty important. A few nations have yet to get their campaign underway, but two teams who have already kickstarted their respective runs are Mexico and Canada. The two nations are set to help play host to the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States, but for now, they’ll be battling it out as opponents.
Mexico
Mexico is a nation that is incredibly passionate about its sports, and as such, football is one of their primary interests. Whilst the 2018 FIFA World Cup may not have gone the way they intended, it feels like they should be confident about the direction they’re heading in as we look ahead to the future. They may not have the biggest names but they do have a great team cohesion, and it honestly feels like they could soon be real players on the big stage as we look ahead to 2026.
Team News
Mexico aren’t expected to make all too many changes after the win over Cuba, with Antuna and Jimenez combining for five goals in that game.
Canada
The Canada women’s national team is thriving in the Women’s World Cup, but the men continue to struggle. There just doesn’t seem to be as much of an investment in the sport in the Great White North, but hopefully, that’s all about to change. With the introduction of the Premier League alongside the 2026 World Cup bid being successful, you’d have to imagine that the future is looking bright for the Canadians. There’s no guarantee that they can be big time players, but they’re certainly on the right track.
Team News
Hoilett and Davies were brought off in the last game to preserve their fitness, as the manager prepares to name what will probably be an unchanged team. Although, some feel like he could switch to five at the back in order to deal with Mexico defensively.
Factors to Consider
- This is the second group stage game, with both Mexico and Canada winning their first group stage encounters.
- Mexico have won five and lost one of their last six games.
- Canada have won their last six games in all competitions.
- Mexico have scored 20 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
- Canada have scored 23 goals and conceded one in their last six games.
Conclusion
Canada seem as if they’re slowly gaining momentum as a national team, but it doesn’t feel like they’re going to have enough in their locker to get a positive result against the Mexicans here. They’re consistently considered to be amongst the underdogs in the World Cup for a reason, and it seems like we’re in the midst of a golden era for the national team. That may be a bit of an overstatement, but we’ll have to wait and see how they fare against the Canadians. In our mind, we think it’ll be pretty convincing.
