After more than four years of waiting, we’ve finally arrived at the return of the FIFA World Cup. The greatest sporting spectacle on the planet will take place in Qatar and while there are so, so many reasons why that shouldn’t be happening, common sense hasn’t been able to prevail. Alas, we’re still expecting to see some great football, especially when Mexico and Poland lock horns on Tuesday afternoon.
Mexico
Mexico fans will, above all else, want to focus on qualifying from Group C – but they’ll also have the dreaded gave five curse in the back of their mind. This is a nation that has been waiting for a real breakout moment over the course of the last few decades and although they have some talent within their ranks, we think they’ll do well to live up to some of their previous successes.
Team News
Jimenez is viewed as a controversial figure to feature given he hasn’t played for Wolves since August but aside from that, Mexico have very few concerns.
Poland
Poland have been teasing a strong run with their ‘golden’ generation for years. They have world class players put together with some severely underrated talent and, in totality, it’ll be pretty intriguing to see if they can actually perform on the World Cup stage for once. It’s not the easiest group in the tournament, but we’d argue it also isn’t the hardest by quite a margin.
Team News
Poland have their full 26-man squad to choose from with Lewandowski being tipped to lead the line.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in November 2017, Mexico beat Poland 1-0.
- Mexico have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Poland have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Mexico have scored eight goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- Poland have scored five goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
Conclusion
We expect a tight and tense affair between two sides who, in a lot of ways, have a lot of pressure on their shoulders to push Argentina all the way in this group. You could argue this one game could decide who will go on to qualify for the last 16 and in terms of an actual prediction, we fancy the chances of Poland to just about edge past Mexico given the lack of attacking potency the Mexicans have on display right now.
