The Premier League will be the focal point of English football over the course of the weekend once again, following an entertaining series of European fixtures during the week. There’s a whole lot to play for as we gear up for the always hectic December period, with many teams playing what some would consider to be an excessive amount of games. Still, it’ll be enjoyable all the same, and today we’re going to be taking a look at what will be an intriguing clash between Newcastle United vs Manchester City.
Newcastle
Newcastle’s start to life under Steve Bruce has been okay, but aside from a few marquee results, most of the same issues remain for the club. They don’t feel like a side capable of pushing into the top half of the table like they probably would’ve done under Rafa Benitez – if he had been given the right time and proper resources with which to do so. They’ve got a long road ahead of them if they’re serious about the possibility of improving the overall state of the club, and that much is obvious.
Team News
Sean Longstaff is available after his suspension, whereas Lascelles and Ritchie will both be missing out due to injury – with Lejeune also likely to sit out.
Manchester City
Manchester City’s title push has hit more than a few roadblocks over the course of the last few weeks, and if they find themselves in this sort of position by the time we get around to 2020, then Liverpool fans will start to feel very confident in their chances of getting the job done. City have more than one focus, though, as they go after the Champions League too, and it’ll be really interesting to see how they wind up managing their resources between now and the end of the season.
Team News
Aguero, Laporte, Sane and Zinchenko are all out of action through injury, swinging the door wide open for Gabriel Jesus to lead the visitors from the front.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in January, Newcastle beat Man City 2-1.
- Newcastle have three wins, one draw and two losses in their last six games.
- Man City have three wins, two draws and one loss in their last six games.
- Newcastle have scored seven goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- Man City have scored 10 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
Conclusion
We find ourselves in a bizarre situation whereby the idea of Newcastle actually scoring against Manchester City and giving them a good game seems plausible. The Magpies are almost certainly going to be in the mix down towards the bottom of the table this season, but in the big games, they often seem to turn up. Even with that being the case we can’t imagine City are going to allow themselves to drop even more points here, and we’re predicting them to get the job done over Newcastle.
