The Premier League is back in our lives this weekend after a two-week break due to the international fixtures that took place throughout the world. We may only be in the early stages of the new campaign and yet there’s still a lot to take away from the games we’ve seen – and from what’s happened so far it looks like fans are in for a wildly unpredictable and exciting season. Today, we’re going to take a look at the impending clash between Newcastle United and Manchester United.

Newcastle

Newcastle fans are always going to be unhappy with how things are going as long as Mike Ashley is still the man at the helm of the club, but when you take one look at their actual squad, there are reasons to feel positive. They still need to find the balance between defensive stability and a strong attacking presence but in a game like this, they really shouldn’t be afraid of going forward and getting after the visitors.

Team News

Newcastle have some big concerns in terms of their absences heading into this game. Lewis, Lascelles, Saint-Maximin and Yedlin are back in training but aren’t confirmed to be starting, Dubravka, Gayle and Ritchie are out and M.Longstaff, Dummett and Clark are still working their way back to full fitness.

Manchester United

Manchester United are drowning under the pressure of a panicked transfer window and poor performances on the pitch, and they need to start fighting back. For years they were the ones running the show in English football but that hasn’t been the case for quite some time, and if they aren’t careful, they could drop down even further. The players are there for them to thrive but for whatever reason things just aren’t clicking together – and fans will be hoping that a trip to Tyneside will be the catalyst behind that change.

Team News

Cavani is in self-isolation and will have to wait for his United debut, Jones is injured, Martial is suspended, and Tuanzebe & Maguire are both doubts.

Factors to Consider

  • In their last meeting on Boxing Day 2019, Man United beat Newcastle 4-1.
  • Newcastle have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
  • Man United have won three and lost three of their last six games.
  • Newcastle have scored 13 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
  • Man United have scored 11 goals and conceded 12 in their last six games.

Conclusion

This is probably going to be a pretty ugly game of football and while that isn’t a great incentive for neutrals to watch, it will be fascinating to see whether or not Manchester United can edge out a win when their backs are against the wall. Newcastle are bound to make life incredibly difficult for them with some aerial work and tough challenges but when push comes to shove, the Red Devils should have enough to just about win the game – but it’s going to be close.
