The Premier League is back in action once again this weekend with a host of entertaining fixtures, following on from a string of dramatic twists and turns in Europe during the week. There are a few clear races in which the favourite is becoming clear but in equal measure, there’s also a great deal of uncertainty still in the mix as we prepare to head into the month of March. Today, we’re going to take a look at Saturday’s late kickoff as Newcastle United host Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Newcastle
Newcastle fans are pretty sick and tired of Steve Bruce at this point, and yet, it doesn’t seem as if he’s going anywhere between now and the end of the campaign. That’s bad news when you take a look at the relegation battle with the Magpies knowing they could slip into the bottom three by the end of the weekend. They’ve got the players necessary to stay in this division, but actually giving them the freedom to express themselves seems to be the stumbling block right now.
Team News
Fernandez, Dummett and Joelinton are all fitness doubts for the visit of Wolves with Dubravka being tipped to replace Darlow in goal. Elsewhere, Manquillo, Wilson and Schar have all been officially ruled out of contention.
Wolves
Wolves supporters have been busy breathing a sigh of relief in the last few weeks after a few results eased the pressure on both their Premier League status and Nuno Espirito Santo’s position as manager. There are obviously some clear issues that still need to be addressed if this club is serious about becoming regular mainstays in the top half of the table, and they need to finish the season strong if they want to keep hold of their biggest stars beyond the summer.
Team News
Marcal is a doubt here after being forced off through injury once again in the game against Leeds. Outside of that the three confirmed injury absences are the same with Podence, Boly and Jimenez still fighting to get back into the starting XI.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in October, Wolves and Newcastle drew 1-1.
- Newcastle have won two and lost four of their last six games.
- Wolves have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Newcastle have scored eight goals and conceded 11 in their last six games.
- Wolves have scored five goals and conceded five in their last six games.
This isn’t going to be a particularly beautiful game of football to finish off the action on Saturday with both teams being pretty trigger shy as of late. Newcastle have been in better scoring form but they’ll struggle to break down Wolves defensively, whereas Nuno’s men can’t quite seem to find the edge they’ve had in the last few seasons. In the end, though, we’re backing the visitors to just about claim a 1-0 win to give their outside European hopes a boost. Prediction: Wolves win Best Odds: 5/4 Bookmaker: 888sport
