The Premier League is back once again this weekend, as teams attempt to build up some early momentum for themselves with the brand new season having gotten underway. The two sides we’re looking at today are both expected to feature in the relegation battle between now and the end of the campaign, but given how early we are in the season, you just never know what could be coming around the next corner. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how we think Norwich City vs Newcastle United will play out.
Norwich
Norwich had a phenomenal campaign in 2018/19, earning promotion from the Championship in the process. They’ve stuck with a large core of their squad that got them to the dance, which is certainly a brave tactic for them in a league as competitive as this one. They aren’t afraid to come forward in numbers, but in equal measure, that leaves them incredibly vulnerable at the back. If they can find the balance, then maybe, just maybe, they could have a successful tenure back in the big time.
Team News
Zimmermann and Klose are both still set to miss out through injury, with questions surrounding whether or not Ibrahim Amadou will be put into the starting XI. Farke isn’t expected to make all too many changes despite the loss to Liverpool, though, even with Onel Hernandez campaigning for a start.
Newcastle
There’s no way of getting around the fact that the arrival of Steve Bruce hasn’t been particularly well received by the masses, with Rafa Benitez leaving the Magpies prior to that. From the protests to the lack of an atmosphere within the stadium, it’s pretty obvious to see that Newcastle are going to have a difficult season. Alas, they did manage to bring in a few notable names for some serious cash, so maybe their demise has been greatly exaggerated by the media.
Team News
Saint-Maximin is a doubt due to a quick injury niggle, with Jonjo Shelvey hoping to shake off an injury scare to appear.
Factors to Consider
- The game will be played at Norwich’s Carrow Road.
- Norwich lost their first Premier League game of the season 4-1 to Liverpool.
- Newcastle lost their first Premier League game of the season 1-0 to Arsenal.
- Newcastle lead the overall head to head standings 24-16 with 16 draws.
- In their last meeting back in February 2017, they drew 2-2.
Conclusion
Based on the trajectory of both teams this is going to seem a little bit odd, but we’re picking Newcastle to secure the three points here. Norwich are going to find their feet eventually, but we can’t see it happening just yet. The Magpies have a few match winners within their ranks despite the fact that there seems to be a bit of turmoil behind the scenes, whereas the Canaries have some major defensive issues that need to be resolved. Either way, we think there’s going to be goals here.
