Following on from a two-week international break, club football is set to return across the globe this weekend. Ligue 1 is one such league that will be back in action and in a Sunday night showcase, we’ll be treated to a fun encounter between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais. These two sides have spent years battling one another but right now, they find themselves in very different positions.
PSG
Despite being one of the best clubs in world football, Paris Saint-Germain’s success continues to be contained within the domestic scene. Their exit from the Champions League, once again at the hands of Bayern Munich, served as a reminder of how far they still have to go. They may have a team full of absolute superstars but unless they’re working as a cohesive unit, it won’t mean a whole lot.
Team News
Neymar, Mukiele and Kimpembe are all out of action through injury with Ramos being a doubt due to a calf problem.
Lyon
The days of Lyon being a consistent force in French football are, for the time being, over. They’ve instead been pushed back to midtable and although they’ve pulled off a few solid wins here and there, this season has been full of disappointment. It’s almost as if they’re in the midst of a rebuild but if they take too much longer to put the pieces together, they’ll struggle to vault back into the European race.
Team News
The only fitness concern here is Gusto, with the good news being that Lopes is back in training and should feature.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in September, PSG beat Lyon 1-0.
- PSG have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Lyon have won two, drawn three and lost one of their last six games.
- PSG have scored 13 goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
- Lyon have scored 10 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
Conclusion
Lyon have done well to neutralise teams in recent weeks and, in some cases, match them blow for blow in their final third. They still serve as a frustrating side to watch for their own fans but in a clash like this, we can picture them being as focused as ever. Alas, this PSG squad can really turn it on when it matters, and we expect them to wait it out until the final half hour – at which point, they’ll blow the visitors away.
