With the Champions League knockout stage getting underway midweek, Real Madrid will make the trip to the Parc des Princes when they meet French giants PSG on Tuesday night.

PSG

Starting with the hosts, putting on a professional display last weekend and picking up some perfect momentum at the Parc des Princes, Mauricio Pochettino’s side appear to be cruising towards another Ligue 1 crown this season. Picking up a last-gasp 1-0 win against an impressive Rennes side last time out, the former Tottenham boss has really seen his side prove their Coupe de France defeat against Nice last month was just a minor blip. Already storming their way to a commanding 13-point buffer over the chasing pack in Ligue 1, Les Parisiens have lost just one of their last 14 straight matchups across all formats, a run that stems back to 2-1 defeat against Manchester City on November 24th. Finding a way to build off of their stunning 5-1 romp against defending French champions Lille earlier in the month, Pochettino’s squad also have a host of heavyweight attacking options he can call upon on Tuesday night.

Team News

Bagging the winner against Rennes last weekend, Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappe should join seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi in attack on Tuesday night.

However, PSG are expected to once again be without both Neymar and former Los Blancos icon Sergio Ramos in midweek as the duo still deals with injury issues.

Real Madrid

As for the visitors, while Real Madrid might find themselves in an almost identical situation to their fellow European giants, Los Blancos are enduring a recent blip. Having to settle for a 0-0 stalemate away at Villarreal over the weekend, Head Coach Carlo Ancelotti has been vocal about his side’s inconsistencies over the past month. Crashing out of the Copa del Rey on February 3rd thanks to a 1-0 loss against Athletic Bilbao on the road, the now-former Everton boss has seen his side win just one of their previous five matchups across all formats within 90 minutes. However, still holding a four-point buffer at the top of the La Liga table, fans around the Spanish capital are desperate for their side to pick up an early advantage in Paris this week. However, it should be noted, Madrid were hit with a 3-0 drumming when they previously made the trip to the Parc des Princes back in September 2019.

Team News

Once again missing out against Villarreal over the weekend, Karim Benzema is not expected to feature here as he deals with a frustrating thigh injury.

Likewise, also still dealing with his own muscle issue, French defender Ferland Mendy is not likely to make the trip to Paris on Tuesday night.

Key Factors to Consider

    • When the two sides last faced off back in 2019 during the Group Stage, PSG picked up four points from their back-to-back meetings against Madrid.
    • In fact, Tuesday’s hosts also picked up a 3-0 victory the last time they welcomed Los Blancos to town in September 2019.
    • Real Madrid have managed to win just one of their last five matchups across all competitions within 90 minutes.
    • PSG have lost just a single matchup across all formats since a 2-1 defeat against Premier League giants Manchester City on November 24th.
    • Real Madrid have drawn a blank in each of their last three La Liga away fixtures on the spin.

    Conclusion

Managing to snatch a late 1-0 win at home against Rennes over the weekend, there is no doubt that PSG will be looking to lay down a real Champions League marker here. Appearing to have put their Coupe de France penalties defeat against Nice behind them, Tuesday’s hosts have still continued to impress on home soil this season. Almost storming their way towards another Ligue 1 crown this year, the French giants should be smelling the chance to gain an early advantage in midweek. Landing that 3-0 win the last time Los Blancos came to town, Real Madrid should be in for a tough test on foreign soil. Struggling to fill the void left by Karim Benzema’s recent injury issue, the Whites have also shown some extended problems on the road. While we don’t expect an abundance of goals here, we’re backing a home victory for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in a real heavyweight showdown.

    Verdict: PSG win
