We’re at the half-way stage of this season’s Champions League group stage and there’s still a whole lot to fight for across all eight groups. Group A, in particular, has already thrown up a few surprises with the supposed “top dogs” not having it all their own way up to this point – and RB Leipzig will hope to capitalise on that when they meet Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
RB Leipzig
From title contenders to eighth in the league – it’s been quite the fall from grace for RB Leipzig. They’re starting to be viewed by many as something of a feeder club and while they have managed to improve their form across the last few weeks, there’s no guarantee that they won’t hit another dodgy run of form. Plus, when you look at their results thus far in Europe, something tells us it may actually be a benefit for them to drop out of the Champions League in favour of rejuvenation on the domestic front.
Team News
Klostermann, Halstenberg, Brobbey and Saracchi are all on the shelf through injury for this one.
Paris Saint-Germain
The super squad of Paris Saint-Germain was always going to draw a lot of attention across world football, but in the group stage, they’ve been less than convincing – despite still being top of the pile. Some put that down to Lionel Messi not quite hitting top form just yet but if they can start to find more of a rhythm in the first team, they’ll start hitting their stride just in time for the knockouts.
Team News
Verratti, Ramos and Messi are all bit absentees here with Mbappe and Paredes being fitness doubts.
Factors to Consider
- In the reverse fixture, PSG beat Leipzig 3-2.
- Leipzig have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- PSG have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
- Leipzig have scored 12 goals and conceded six in their last six games.
- PSG have scored nine goals and conceded six in their last six games.
Conclusion
There’s just something about Leipzig in Europe this season that isn’t quite clicking into place and we think that’s a sign of the times with regards to the Bundesliga. It’s just not a league that can compete with some of Europe’s elite and when you match one of their elite sides, like Leipzig, up against PSG, they just don’t have what it takes to overcome them. We think PSG will win this one and it’ll be even more convincing than what they produced at home.
