La Liga’s schedule across December isn’t quite as intense as the Premier League but even with that being the case, there’s still a whole lot to get excited about between now and the new year. One such example of that comes this weekend when one of the most intense rivalries across the continent is revived, pitting Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid against one another for all of the bragging rights.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s level of focus this season is absolutely insane and don’t blink now, but they may well be the favourites to go all the way and win the Champions League as well as La Liga – oh, and don’t be surprised if the Copa del Rey is in play too. Carlo Ancelotti has got them playing to their strengths again and that’s going to be really dangerous for everyone that comes up against them.

Team News

Bale is back in the squad after missing months through injury with Benzema expected to also return in a big boost for the hosts. Elsewhere, the only major absentee as of this writing is Dani Ceballos.

Atletico Madrid

The reigning Spanish champions have a whole lot worth fighting for this season and they have managed to break into the last 16 of the Champions League, despite it looking pretty unlikely that they’d do so. Still, after such a triumphant campaign last time out it feels strange to think that they’ve been going backwards – especially with the kind of squad that should warrant then going in the opposite direction.

Team News

Cunha is expected to make his way into the starting XI with the following players being out injured for the visitors: Trippier, Suarez and Savic.

Factors to Consider

  • Real are 1st in La Liga whereas Atletico are 4th.
  • Real are unbeaten in their last 12 games in all competitions.
  • Atletico have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
  • Real have scored 14 goals and conceded two in their last six games.
  • Atletico have scored 12 goals and conceded eight in their last six games.

Conclusion

While momentum is something both teams possess at this moment in time, we can only picture one outcome in this fixture – Real Madrid coming out on top. Their composure seems to be at a different level right now and with them already being 10 points above their city rivals in the table, it already feels unlikely that Atletico are going to fight back into the title race. We’re going with 2-1 Real in what should be an entertaining clash.
