We’ve finally made our way through to the final set of group stage fixtures at UEFA Euro 2020 which seems to have happened in the blink of an eye. Group A has already finished up their campaign and tonight, Group B will be joining them with all four countries hoping to round things off in a big way. Today, we’re going to take a look at what should be an enticing affair between Russia and Denmark tonight.
Russia
The Russians seem to thrive under a home-field advantage and while they won’t have that in this game, the win over Finland would’ve given them the confidence to believe they can edge through in second place. They have power and determination on their side to make up for the fact that, in more ways than one, they just can’t seem to hold a candle to some of the better nations in this tournament.
Team News
Zhirkov is out through injury here with Mostovoy also being ruled out for the visitors. Fernandes was taken to hospital with a spinal injury but has been cleared since then, although his overall fitness in time for kick-off has been questioned.
Denmark
Denmark’s run at Euro 2020 has been hit by the tragic collapse of Christian Eriksen in their first game, but they aren’t the kind of team to go down without a fight. We still think they’ve got some match winners in their ranks who can spring a surprise on the final day, although in all honesty, it may not even be seen as a surprise with bookmakers believing the Copenhagen crowd can see them through to victory this evening.
Team News
The hosts are set to stick with a back three after their success against Belgium with the only major absence, of course, being Eriksen, who may be forced to retire as a result of going into cardiac arrest in their opening fitxture.
Factors to Consider
- Russia are in 2nd place with three points whereas Denmark are in 4th place with zero points.
- Russia have won one and lost one of their Euro 2020 games.
- Denmark have lost both of their Euro 2020 games.
- Russia have scored one goal and conceded three in the tournament.
- Denmark have scored one goal and concede three in the tournament.
Conclusion
The fact that the Danes will still be in Copenhagen for this one surely has to bode well for them in what we’d expect to be a bit of a slobberknocker between two nations wanting to make a real statement. We don’t think it’s going to be particularly technical with Belgium vs Finland likely serving as the better of the two group fixtures to watch, but we do expect both sides to get on the scoresheet, leaving us with a 1-1 draw as the final result. From there, Russia will be hgopin to get a favour from Belgium that will hand them the keys to a place in the Round of 16.
