The German domestic season has almost come to an end with the Bundesliga crown being awarded to Bayern Munich, with no real surprises being in the pipeline there. In terms of the DFB-Pokal, however, there have definitely been a few shocks along the way – leaving us with a final that could be an all-time classic as SC Freiburg go head to head with RB Leipzig for the right to win the cup.

SC Freiburg

A yo-yo club no more, Freiburg can rest easy knowing they’ll be playing European football next season. In addition to that they’re also one game away from winning the DFB-Pokal, which few would’ve expected given that they only just edged past Wurzburger Kickers 1-0 and VfL Osnabruck on penalties. From there they started to find their rhythm with triumphs over Hoffenheim, Bochum and Hamburg getting them to the big dance.

Team News

Keitel and Schade are currently listed as fitness concerns but aside from that, Freiburg should have a clean bill of health.

RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig have come close to achieving their goal of winning some of the biggest prizes available to them on more than one occasion. At the same time, they’ve also made it hard for themselves – but one goal conceded in five cup games on this run is no accident. They’ve beaten Sandhausen, Babelsberg, Hansa, Hannover and finally Union Berlin, and they’re quite clearly the favourites in the final.

Team News

Haidara is almost back to full fitness following a recent knee injury with Gvardiol having a knee issue of his own that could rule him out.

Factors to Consider

  • Freiburg have never won the DFB-Pokal whereas Leipzig have only finished as runners-up twice.
  • Freiburg have won four, drawn one and lost one of their last six games.
  • Leipzig have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
  • Freiburg have scored 16 goals and conceded 10 in their last six games.
  • Leipzig have scored nine goals and conceded nine in their last six games.

Conclusion

This has the potential to be one of the most exciting cup finals in years and with both teams being desperate to lift a piece of silverware to round off the season, we’re expecting end-to-end football. Hopefully the ref lets the action flow and if he does, we’re expecting Leipzig to just about edge past Freiburg in extra time with a 2-1 victory.

Prediction: Leipzig win
