The La Liga season is back after the international break and it’s safe to say there’s still a whole lot left to play for. Between the bottom three and the title race it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which the big decisions don’t come down to the wire in a campaign that has been littered with twists and turns. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be an intriguing clash between two of Spanish football’s finest – Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
Sevilla
After a tough season it seems as if Sevilla are starting to find their feet and when you look at their remaining fixtures, that could mean there’s a very good chance they wind up playing the role of spoiler. They still have a decent squad and they actually still have quite a lot to fight for as their attempt to become one of La Liga’s elite clubs continues. They may have lost to Atletico earlier in the season, but we don’t think they’ve got any reason whatsoever to fear them.
Team News
Fernando should be back to full fitness in time for this one with Rakitic being tipped to feature ahead of Torres. In terms of injury problems, Vidal is the only fitness doubt.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid have slowly but surely building themselves up as title contenders throughout the season but now, they’re in a position whereby they are the legitimate favourites to walk away with the crown. There’s going to be an element of pressure heading into the final set of league games but they just need to treat every single encounter like a cup final, and if they do that, they’ll be well on their way to upsetting the odds once again.
Team News
Carrasco is suspended for this game with Saul being expected to play some kind of role in the game. Gimenez should also be fit to start with Felix having a minor ankle injury that could rule him out of a game Atletico can’t really afford to lose.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in January, Atletico beat Sevilla 2-0.
- Sevilla have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
- Atletico have won three, drawn two and lost one of their last six games.
- Sevilla have scored seven goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
- Atletico have scored six goals and conceded four in their last six games.
Conclusion
These two sides have a lot to lose at this stage of the season but we can definitely see some signs that Atletico are beginning to fade down the stretch. We aren’t suggesting they’re going to give up the title race in a devastating manner or anything like that, but at the same time, Sevilla are often a tough nut to crack and we think they will be again here. It’s going to be close, and as such we’ll be backing an exciting 1-1 draw.
