This will be the decisive match for both sides, with England needing a win to go through, whereas Slovenia would qualify for the next round even with one point from this match.
Not too many people expected Slovenia to be in the best position to qualify from this group before the last final round, but Matjaz Kek’s side managed to pick up four points from first two games and they now need just one more to make it to the last 16 stage. The team have shown a lot of promise so far, but they also exhibited a lot of weaknesses, especially in the USA game. After being 2:0 up at half time, they allowed the Americans to get back into the game and almost ended up losing the match in question, which can only be attributed to the inexperience of their players. It does seem Slovenia took more points than they deserved to after being outplayed by both Algeria and USA, and I cannot see them riding their luck for much longer. Matjaz Kek is set to field the same side that started the last game but I think his protégés face problems dealing with the pressure in such a high-profile game.
England look to be in pieces at the moment, after two opening draws, which is really not surprising as this team were dubbed as one of the tournament favourites. While the Three Lions showed some potential in their opening game, they were utterly disappointing against Algeria, and are now in a very difficult position. The atmosphere in the camp has never been worse and there are reports of conflicts amongst the players, but I feel that is all a bit exaggerated since it’s normal for the players to feel down after some under-par performances. It’s true the players should stop worrying about the transfer news and things being written in the media, and concentrate on the job before them. I believe Fabio Capello will regain control over the squad and inspire them to a good performance in this massive game for the whole country. If players like Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard give just 50% of their abilities, England will emerge victorious and salvage their World Cup campaign. The boss faces some selection worries since Ledley King and Jamie Carragher miss out through injury and suspension respectively, but the good news is Micheal Carrick has resumed training and he will be fit to play.
Conclusion
Slovenia were lucky to pick four points in the first two games and this game will be the first real test for them. Matjaz Kek’s players lack the experience at the big stage and could have problems matching the technically superior England. Even though they don’t look too impressive at the moment, the Three Lions have got the quality, experience and drive to win this game and I expect them to finally come good and make it carry on their quest for the World Cup title.
