The Premier League is back once again this weekend and while we may not have a full slate of fixtures due to the FA Cup, there’s still some exciting action to delve into. Things are beginning to heat up at both ends of the table with the final stretch of the campaign not too long away, and today, we’ll be taking a look at two clubs with very different priorities as Southampton prepare to host Tottenham Hotspur.
Southampton
Following eleven straight seasons in the Premier League, it should come as no surprise that Southampton are finally starting to hit the wall. The Saints just don’t have the same kind of star power that they once did and while relegation isn’t exactly a certainty given how unpredictable it is down the bottom, you’d have to say that they are now considered to be one of the favourites for the drop.
Team News
Larios and Livramento are both still out of action through injury with Walker-Peters and Maitland-Niles being fitness concerns.
Tottenham
The Antonio Conte experiment, up to this point, hasn’t quite gone as well as many would’ve hoped. There’s definitely been progress in some parts of the pitch but in an overall sense, Tottenham Hotspur supporters aren’t happy. There is already talk of the Italian leaving at the end of the season but before that, they need to focus on their one remaining mission: securing Champions League football once again.
Team News
Emerson is a currently listed as doubtful whereas Lloris, Bentancur, Sessegnon and Bissouma are all still injured.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in August, Tottenham beat Southampton 4-1.
- Southampton have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Tottenham have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Southampton have scored three goals and conceded five in their last six games.
- Tottenham have scored seven goals and conceded three in their last six games.
Conclusion
We don’t expect this one to be much of a classic, largely because both sides are fairly capable when it comes to keeping things tight at the back. In addition to that, neither team plays a particularly exciting brand of football, meaning there should be a stalemate expected for large portions of the game. With that being said, we do think Spurs have a little bit more in the tank, which is why we back them to secure a late win.
