Following three straight league stalemates, Manchester United will see this clash as a must-win game, although they are in for a difficult task at Britannia, especially with Stoke in such a good form. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will be boosted by the fact Wayne Rooney agreed to a new five-year deal, although Wazza will not be able to help them in this match.
Over the years Stoke have established themselves as a real mid table side, capable of matching even the best sides in the league at their home ground and Britannia remains one of the most difficult grounds for away teams. The Potters’ good start of the season proves Manchester United will have to work hard for the win, although Tony Pulis should be worried with his side’s performances against the top sides. Stoke have beaten Fulham and Aston Villa at Britannia but lost to Tottenham at home and Chelsea away, so they seem to lack that final touch to come on top of the best sides in the Premiership. The last minute defeat to Bolton ended their three-match winning run and this is hardly the right time to be facing wounded Manchester United. Their physical approach is set to cause the visitors major problems, but on the other hand, United’s technical superiority should prove too much for Stoke. Toni Pulis is without Dean Whitehead and Mamadou Sidibe, whereas Ricardo Fuller should be fit to play.
The Wayne Rooney saga helped shift the focus from team’s lackluster showings to the player who’s used to being at the centre stage and the latest developments could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Sir Alex Ferguson, especially as he managed to convince his star that his future lies at Old Trafford. In all fairness, Manchester United were unlucky to drop points against Fulham, Everton and West Brom, but that cannot be an excuse and the team have got to start playing to their potential. On the other hand, there have been several encouraging performances like that against Liverpool, West Ham and Newcastle, so the Red Devils only need to stabilize their form before returning to the right track. The return of Rio Ferdinand has helped sort out the back line that kept three clean sheets in last four games, and another one of those would guarantee them a victory against Stoke. Wayne Rooney continues to miss out with an ankle problem, while Jonny Evans, Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen are also out.
Conclusion
There is no doubt Stoke will give United a hard time at Britannia but the Potters don’t look capable of getting something from this match. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are slowly raising their form, with the win over Bursa a step in the right direction, and their sheer quality should prove too much for the hosts to handle.
