While the domestic season may be over across Europe, there’s still a lot of football left to be played in the United States as this year’s Major League Soccer campaign rolls on. A parade of clubs across both conferences are hoping that they can make it to the post-season and today, we’re going to take a look at a clash between two clubs needing some hope: Toronto FC and Columbus Crew.
Toronto FC
Toronto hit the front of the pack in a big way back in 2017 by capturing the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in the same season, and while it seemed as if they’d kick on to bigger and better things, they’ve somewhat been unable to get over the final hurdle. This feels like an ‘off season’ by their standards but as Canada’s finest MLS export, they won’t be too worried until we get further into the mix.
Team News
Okello is the only confirmed injury absence for Toronto who otherwise have a clean bill of health for the Crew’s visit.
Columbus Crew
They may not always be the most consistent but after being in existence for almost 30 years, you can’t argue against Columbus Crew having a great pedigree in the MLS. They appear to be in the midst of a rebuild of sorts right now but given that they won the MLS Cup in 2020, and finished as runners-up five years prior, we think fans may understand a few hardships from time to time.
Team News
Artur is out through injury with the following players requiring check-ups: Santos, Yeboah, Etienne, Trapp, Zelarayan, Hurtado, Sands and Hairston.
Factors to Consider
- Toronto are 11th in the Eastern Conference whereas Columbus are 12th.
- Toronto have won two, drawn one and lost three of their last six games.
- Columbus have won one, drawn three and lost two of their last six games.
- Toronto have scored eight goals and conceded nine in their last six games.
- Columbus have scored five goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
Conclusion
Within the context of the season so far, neither team is going to stand tall as a favourite here – but we do expect Toronto to have a little bit more left in the tank in comparison to the visitors. The home crowd will be behind them, they’re more lethal in front of goal, and they should be a bit more desperate, which is why we’re backing the hosts to take this one 2-1.
